So... I am a teacher and I like to film mini lectures on location and I would love to record a three minute mini lecture using my selfie stick while at Epcot on culture and diversity while applying it to the world showcase. Will this be a problem at all? I don't want to be yelled at! Ha!

People take videos all the time in the parks so I don't think they would have much to say about it. If you were traveling with big equipment and crew that may be different but someone with a selfie stick doesn't seem like it would cause much of a ruckus.

Are you going with other people? Might another person hold your camera for you?

Selfie sticks are the bane of my existence (actually, "selfies" and their name are more of a bane), but *someone filming someone else* is different. (we had such fun offering to take pictures of people struggling to hold their phones out far enough...every time the looks on faces showed me that people have forgotten that other people exist and might be able to do something for another person...)

If Disney thinks you are recording for professional purposes they will probably tell you to stop. You generally need permission to tape things that are not strictly for personal use. Recording segments for a lecture is probably not allowed.

I would ask permission. Everything at Disney is "personal use only" unless permission is obtained. They will need to know you are using it for classroom purposes.

I thought selfie sticks were longer allowed in parks, or was that just on rides? Something about people getting hit by them, kids walking into them, etc.

They've been banned on rides.

OP, I really feel like the parks are generally too crowded for you to be able to use a selfie stick for a solid 3 minutes, but use your best judgement.

The only rules on selfie sticks is that you can't use them on rides.

OP, 3 minutes is a long time if you are blocking traffic in any way. I just urge you to find a spot that won't be in a traffic area and I imagine you will be just fine.

You can also get the images you need for your lecture without being in the shots and just add voiceover when you get home. Very easy to do.

This seems to be much more workable to me- Trying to get a lecture recorded live, with no interruptions or mistakes would be very difficult I would think. Film first, voice over later.

But a great idea OP! Teachers trying to make the classroom innovative and interesting- love it!

I'm not sure OP would need permission - does the DisUnplugged team need permission when they do their park videos? Perhaps this is a good question to post over in the podcast forum, @kiapepito. I bet the team would know!

As long as it isn't for commercial use, e.g. selling it or charging people to watch it, no permission is needed.

Thanks everyone! I was thinking it would be 3 minutes in total but filming in three different locations. I just don't want it to be a problem since it is for my online college class. I always try to bump it up a notch and with others that visit the parks and post online like personal trips I thought it would be okay. The only reason I was going to use the stick is because my husband will be taking our kids while I attempt it! Ha! I also would film in a lower trafficking area. If not, I do like the idea of the voice over. Thanks again!

I think there are PLENTY of areas around World Showcase where having a selfie stick held over the fence out toward the lagoon, with the camera pointing back toward the pavilion would give a MARVELOUS view of the country behind you, would keep you well out of the way of the traffic, and would keep the selfie stick from being any problem at all, as long as you don't drop the stick and camera out over the fence where you can't reach it lol.

The bottom line, if and how your doing a recording does not bother others, (like lights in rides or a camera on a stick blocking others views) I don't see a problem.

AKK

There are also lots of places in the countries that are not crowded that I think would make a good place - for instance in Morocco, inside their museum, not many people go inside that door (before the courtyard) Inside the tiles were cut and placed by hand from people from Morocco - as well as providing the clothing inside this area... there are places up the path in Canada, around the top, people usually stop by the store - but keep going and there is quite a few quiet areas!

I'm not gonna give you my opinion about the stick because you didn't ask for that and I think it's completely unimportant in the context of your question. i think it's a fantastic idea and I think you will be able to find all kinds of areas in the world showcase where you can easily do what you are hoping to do. Have fun with it! :)
