Just got back from a wonderful trip and thought I would post a few random thoughts.

Weather: For the most part, we had wonderful weather but have learned from past trips to never trust the forecast before leaving for Florida, and ALWAYS have gear for extreme cold despite being in FL. Last night was quite chilly at Epcot due to the wind. Lots of people dressed in winter gear with gloves, hats, the whole nine yards (and as usual for Disney, also people in shorts and t-shirts!). I feel sorry for the people arriving for New Years week. Weather forecast looks wet and cold!

DME: It took about 90 mins to get to our resort from the time of landing to arriving at the front doors. The wait for the bus was short and our resort was the first of 4 stops. Luggage arrived by the time we arrived back at the hotel in the evening.

Groceries
: Arrived in our room shortly after we arrived. Garden Grocer was fantastic to deal with.

Buses: Read some horror stories on this forum but we had fantastic luck. Only on our last of 7 park days did we have to wait more than 5 mins for a bus.

Xmas day: We went against the sage advice of the forum members and went to MK on the 25th. It was both terrible and fantastic. I am so glad we did it, just to say that we did it. What could be more magical than spending Christmas at MK? However, it took over an hour of driving time on the bus to get there. Thanks to those forum members who advised me not to drive there. Those that did would have spent well over an hour on the road, then have to deal with the tram and ferry/monorail. That would have been brutal.

The quick service lines were just INSANE. Fortunately, we did Liberty Tree for lunch, Skipper Canteen for dinner, and had a dessert party for HEA. If you ever go on Christmas, do not do it without table service unless you are a glutton for punishment.

Rides: We are not a rope drop family. I don't know how people get up for rope drop with kids when they have been out late the night before. Nonetheless, with good FP+ planning and the ability to get extra FP+ when all 3 have been used up, we still had a great time. Some of the FP+ lines were long, but moved very quickly and didn't seem any slower to move than usual.

Illness: Unfortunately, illness is a fact of life, especially in the winter. My daughter was pretty sick for the first few days, and we had to miss HEA our first MK day, and also missed 7DMT twice! You make the best of it and move on. We still had an amazing vacation in the end.

Dining: I can't stress how important it is to do some table service at this time of the year. We had 2 TS every MK day, and at least one in the other parks. IMO it is less crucial at HS and Epcot. AK was quite crowded and I'm glad we had one there but probably could have survived without it. Didn't get a chance to try mobile ordering, but that would probably be a lifesaver provided you could find a table. We paid OOP instead of doing the dining plan as we had a mixture of TS/QS that would not suit the dining plan, and we had next to no snacks as we were always stuffed.

We also learned that a buffet lunch and TS dinner doesn't leave much room in your stomach for a dessert party. Well duh. We did this twice, lol.

Illuminations: We have never done FP+ for this but after refreshing the MDE app multiple times in the evening, I was able to snag one at our last Epcot night. It might have been a combination of the cold weather and late showing (10:30) that made some FP available. We usually watch from the American pavilion with a great view, but OMG, the view from the FP+ location is incredible, and the finale with the holiday tag is just spectacular. Get the FP+ if you are able to do so!

Fog & Fireworks do not mix
: HEA on the 28th was a complete disappointment due to fog. You literally could not see anything. To add insult to injury, we did a dessert party for it as well.

Crowds: Yes, MK was wall-to-wall on the 25th and it did close for a period of time in the afternoon (not sure which phase). However, the rest of the days weren't all that bad. I guess it's what you're used to. We have never gone at a low crowd time so we are used to it being very busy. For the most part, I didn't mind it. We tried Frontierland one day for the parade as we read that is a good spot for lower crowds. This might be true, but not during Xmas week. You literally could not move when the parade was over as people were trying to disperse in all different directions and it was complete chaos. We'll stick to the hub.

Xmas eve was at Epcot with the Candlelight Processional, which was a wonderful show. Illuminations was at 10:30 again and it seemed like a virtual ghost town (not exaggerating) Very strange.

Guests & CMs: As usual, there were rude guests, and crazy guests (FOP stand by got up to 310 mins and there were still people getting in line). I could not imagine waiting over 5 hours for any ride.

While waiting for the parade, I watched a CM doing crowd control and have a new found respect for them. She did a wonderful job and was very patient with rude guests. Kudos to all the CMs who worked over the holidays to allow all of us to have a magical holiday!

A bit of pixie dust: After doing a pin trade, a CM gave my daughter a free bag of cotton candy. It made her day!

Well, that's about it. Soon it will be time to start planning for next year, possibly a New Year's trip this time!

Great report! I agree that TS is imperative if you go at such a busy time. There is no way I would chance waiting in extremely long lines to get some lunch or dinner. I actually always suggest some extra TS if you are traveling in the Summer months. There is nothing more welcome than knowing you have a spot waiting when you want to get out of the Sun to eat.

Sounds like a great trip! I would love to take our family during the holidays but it just doesn't work with my school schedule. Maybe one day! We'll just have to stick to our rainy June trips for now :thumbsup2

Right?!?!
I've only seen IllumiNations twice, last Easter (2016) and then last week. Did the FP+ for it back in 2016 and was impressed enough to get one again (a 4th FP after three in MK) for this last trip. It was even more spectacular! In 2016, we tried to pack in with the crowd along the railing at the front of the viewing area, and wound up kind of peeking between people's heads and shoulders. This time we stood back against the front of that store (the name escapes me) that is the backside barrier of one part of the viewing area. O.M.G! It was a spectacular view! And that holiday tag finale...well, I still feel it rumbling in my chest! LOL!

Both trips, IllumiNations was the final park night, and I think it's a tradition I will continue. I love ALL fireworks and nighttime shows. They're just my thing. But there is something special about IllumiNations to me.

Gld you had a nice trip! I still kind of want to go ON Christmas (we left on the 20th this year) some day. I'd totally be in the MK on Christmas Day too. Just to say I was there! :)

I love the fireworks and nighttime shows as well. Super bummed when they got rid of the nighttime parade and hoping it will return soon. We saw Paint the Night at Disneyland and that is by far the best parade IMO. I would love for it to come to WDW at some point.

MK on Christmas day was probably a one-and-done for us. Glad we did it. We would definitely go to WDW over Christmas again, but would likely go to another park that day. Honestly, our other 2 MK days this trip didn't feel any different than going on the 25th, except for the fact that the crowds were insane on Christmas day.

Chiming in. On 12/25 We did dhs am with 3 fp, then boat over to Epcot, walked around, listened to holiday music and ate at food kiosks for lunch, dinner with reservation. This worked great and no issue with crowds.
On 12/26 we did ak with fp for safari and fop. Single rider 2x for EE. Stood in line for nemo. Ate counter service at off times. Crowds did not affect us at all. Those without fp for safari stood on line 100 min and 180-240 for fop.
We drove to dhs. After 9:45 am it was completely chaos on the roads. Even buses took 1 hour.

Great tips!

Just a thought on this - in this situation, consider just ordering apps (or maybe a few apps to share.) Enough to get some "real food" on board and mitigate the sugar rush from the dessert party. We do this often, the staff never seem to mind - although we DO tip extra (>20%) to accommodate for taking up the table with a light bill. We're allergy diners, so TS works much better than QS, but also not huge eaters - so this works well for us.

I so wish more people understood this. Not just for cold weather, but for rainy weather as well. :beach:

We are here now - arrived the 24th and also having a great time. We are also not rope droppers, with two college age kids and two teens we are lucky to make it by 11 :) So far we were able to get a 4,5 and 6th FP+ every day, including Navi river as a 4th on the 29th and Everest as a 5th for a party of 6!

Great advice about packing layers- it was so nice the first few days that the cold snap was a surprise, luckily we do have warm clothes.

Patience is a must and I agree about TS but we just do one ADR a day and quick serve or snacks to fill in. Also mobile order has been awesome used it at AK once and MK 3x so far. Heading to Epcot today and we do have an adr for lunch and dinner.

Glad your daughter is feeling better op!

As someone who is planning a Christmas 2018 trip (we've never been during the holidays before), I really appreciate your trip review. It was very informative and helpful to me!! We will definitely take a lot of your advice! Thanks!!

I always check the weather forecast for the wind direction - North-Northwest is the worst. The sun may be shining but that wind can cut through you. I always carry one of those ski headbands and some gloves. Always wear socks with my crocs. And I usually wear a sweatshirt tied around my waist! Disney makes a fortune selling warm duds to the unwary guests.

We are planning a 2018 Christmas trip! Thank you for the review. We are thinking about doing something outside of the parks on Christmas day due to the crowds. Maybe resort hop?

I don't think you need to avoid the parks, just avoid MK, unless you can stay at Bay Lake or Contemporary. You just don't want to bus or drive to MK that day. In fact, I would bet HS or AK would be nice parks to go to on Christmas day.

Hope you have a great time! We will be home for Christmas this year, but will be there for NYE. Staying at Boardwalk to avoid the insane mad rush to get back to the hotels by bus/car after NYE fireworks at Epcot.
