Generally, how long does it take to ride the train, explore casually and ride back? Does the train leave at certain times?

I would say at least an hour, conservatively. Although it depends if your kids want to do Wilderness Badges there (mine did) and meet Rafiki (mine did.) The most annoying and time consuming part to me was waiting for the train to take us back to main AK. I would guess we waited at least 20 minutes just for that. I think it just runs back and forth - if there was a schedule, I wasn't aware of it. My kids had a lot of fun though!

One of my touring plan days has this trip built into an AK day. TP has a 5 min wait for the train each way with a 7 minute ride each way then adds 20 minutes of touring time for a total of 44 minutes.

Does it open at the same time as the rest of the park?

Nope, it generally opens at 10am and closes early as PP showed.

I budget about an hour, but usually end up spending way less. I still make it a point to go there, though. The farm animals are cute and there's always a chance they're doing a vet procedure. Plus, the character lines are short. I've never seen Doc McStuffins's show, but I met her on my last trip because there was literally no one else waiting. She was very sweet.

We are excited for this. Planning on doing it in the afternoon after going through our FPs. Kids love meeting characters so this will add two new ones to their autograph book!

We went to RPW in the early afternoon last month and it was a very relaxing and cool (a/c) visit. If your family is into searching for hidden Mickeys, there are over a hundred or more hidden within the animal murals on the walls.

Random memory...Rafiki was on our train one morning a couple of years ago. We were just siting there waiting for it to leave and he walked up and sat down next to DS. Interacted with him and the other kids near us the whole trip, it was great!

One of those random Disney moments that you couldn’t recreate if you tried, but it left us with a wonderful, lasting memory and great photos!

Try to catch the stage show next to the petting farm. They do so great job. I've seen animals like owls, hedgehogs and porcupines.

And one thing I really enjoyed was the huge mural of animals just inside the main entrance to the building. Beautiful!
