OK...it's been YEARS since we have ventured out to Rafiki's Planet Watch. It was kinda okay for us. We met a lot of fun characters.
The only thing that we did not like AT ALL was the train ride back. It took forever...and a day. Seriously, it was more than an hour just standing there. DH was livid. Because of this, he refuses to venture out that way again.
Is there another way to experience this without being at the mercy of the train?
It's been so long, I really don't remember much at all about it.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

The only advice I can offer is to time the return trip so that you don't have to wait as long. On our last trip, we went early and returned early so we basically beat the crowds into and out of Planet Watch. Of course, whether that strategy will work for you depends on how much else you plan to do that day and when. We came during EMH to do a few rides, went to Planet Watch and then did our scheduled fastpasses beginning mid-morning. That strategy didn't allow us to do all the big ticket rides in the park, but that wasn't our goal.

We didn't do it for years because there was nothing happening when you got there. The last two times we were at WDW we actually spent a fair bit of time there - it's much different. I don't recall waiting for more than about 5 minutes at either end for a train. Maybe there was an issue with the train when you were there.
