Our Story
Bob and I met through a Radiohead chat room when I as 16. We met up for the first time at a Blur concert when I was 17 with a whole group of people. After that, we would basically just see each other every couple years when Radiohead was touring. For their last tour in the summer of 2003, they were playing the Beacon Theater a VERY small venue in NYC which holds about 3,000 people. We had to camp out for tickets and since he was my Radiohead buddy, we went together. 17 hours later, filled with disappointment we didn't get tickets. We had gotten to know each other better, but still strictly just friends. He had a unibrow and I wasn't having any part in that.
I went back to finish my last year of college at the University of Maryland and he moved to Arlington, VA for a different job. We started hanging out more, going to concerts in the DC area and by September we were dating (Plucked his eyebrows too).
So after I graduated, I moved back to Jersey and he moved back with his parents in Jersey so we could earn enough money to move in together. After a couple of months we had an adorable apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. We lived there for the past two years until the rent became out of control ($1740 a month) and just moved last month to Charlotte, NC for work. I was able to keep my NYC salary here, so why not. We're renting right now to get a lay of the land but hope to get a house within the next year and a half.
This is my favorite picture of us.
The Proposal
We had a trip to Disney planned for last September, and I was convinced he'd do it then, since it was going to be our 3 year anniversary and come on.... it's Disney, what could be more perfect? Well he found a way. He wanted to surprise me, and me being me, well I didn't think that would be possible. So let me set the scene. It's the Thursday before Labor Day weekend. I had recently gotten my new position so I wanted to stay at work kind of late to finish everything up since I knew we'd be leaving early on Friday to go to the shore. He had left work early so he could get all the laundry done since we'd be away all weekend. He keeps calling me being like Where are you we have a lot of laundry I need your help. I think it's a little weird, since he's the one who does all the laundry...but we did have a lot since we didn't do it the week before. I finally leave work and get in the subway at Grand Central. I get out of the subway in Park Slope, about 45 minute ride. I have a voice message and a text from him on my cell asking when I'll be home. I call him up and tell him to chill out, I need to run a couple f errands, but I'll be at the Laundromat in about 10 minutes. I get there and he tells me my underwear has just finished in the dryer and I can start folding. I open up the dryer and there is the box
I just think that's such a unique, perfect Brooklyn proposal. I just smiled so much writing that.
The Wedding
Well we had such an amazing time during our Disney trip, probably glowing the whole time from the engagement, that we decided to have the wedding there so everyone we love could have be with us and have fun in Disneyworld. My parents haven't been to Disney since I was 11 months old (1 month after Epcot opened). We were always went to Disneyland since I have cousins in CA, but as you all know, Disneyland does not compare to Disneyworld.
Our custom wedding is planned for January 20th 2008, the Sunday before Martin Luther King Day. This way, our guests will have off from work on the Monday so they can spend more time in the world. Our ceremony will be at the Wedding Pavilion and our reception will be at the Atlantic Dance Hall. Our planner is Celeste DeCicco and our planning session is May 11th. We're having Randy as our photographer, and he will be taking our engagement photos on May 10th.
My sister is going to be my maid of honor, and I'm not going to have any bridesmaids because it would be too hard to choose only a couple people when we're having so few friends coming. How awkward would it be to be the two friends not in the wedding party? I figured if I just kept it at my sister, no one could be offended.
We just got our planning kit, so we've been in planning mode lately. We picked out what cake we want
I found some flowers I love.
You can find my dress under the dress thread on page 38. I won't post a picture of it here since DF reads these almost as much as I do, but he know better than to look at the dress thread. And here is my Tiara. I've basically been wearing it around the house since I got it.
My mom had a good idea for the centerpieces. Atlantic Dance Hall has small four top tables so we won't be doing a seating chart We'll need a lot of centerpieces so we needed to think of something not too expensive. We'll be getting double sided picture frames w/ pictures of Bob and I on each of when we were kids. Bob wanted to make sure they went up to 7 years old so there would be super awkward pictures of me with huge Sally Jessie Raphael style glasses... So I guess that's it so far. I'll be adding as I come up w/ more ideas.
