I watchin $40 a day, and I can't believe how low she tips! I know she is on a budget and her lunch only cost $9, but she only left $1.35 tip! I can't believe anyone would leave under $2!!!!! I hope she or her crew gives the server more when they leave that isn't apart of her $40 budget!

Anyone else think that's low?

That's a 15 percent tip.

I don't know if they do, but trust me the resturant (and therefore the servers) rake it in afterwards from people who eat there becasue of her. So one "short" tip from Rachel is worth a lot... (And I have left under $2. Sorry, but if the service was so so I tip so so)

Umm...You know none of that is real right? LOL

I think she gives a straight 15% but I am fairly confident the crew leaves much more behind afterwards. Plus the publicity they just got is amazing for business!

When DH and I eat at Cracker Barrel for breakfast, we always leave a $3 tip, minimum -which comes to 20%

If we have an inexpensive lunch we tip $5 minimum.

Our son was a waiter for a year, & we know how very hard he worked.

She's not even paying for the meal per se so she is not really leaving that tip. What she is doing is showing how it could be done on $40.00 a day including a baisc minimum of a 15 % tip. I'm sure the places she eats at get well paid for their troubles. It must be very disrupting to have her whole crew and cameras all over the place.

I think the trouble lies in the example she sets for others that may not know how to tip. Sure, 15% might be standard for fair service on a larger bill, but for great service or a small check it really should be more.

You are not suppose to tip on the tax, and I have heard not on drinks either :confused3 **IF** that is how she tips then it would have been more than 15%.

15% is the standard tip for good service, large bill or small bill. She's actually setting a good example for all those folks who think twice about tipping in the first place.

I cannot stand it when someone leaves the 'exact' amout of the tip.Especially if the service has been very good to excellent.I used to go out to dinner with friends that only left 10% tip, exactly, sometimes even less than that, reguardless of how good the service was. This used to bug me to no end.I figure if you can afford to go out to dinner you can afford to leave a descent tip. When we get really good service we show our appreciation by leaving a 20% tip.If service is bad we end up leaving very little if anything.
But I'm glad that has only happened once while on vacation.
Obviously you can tell by my post I do agree the tip should coincide with the kind of service you get.

I always leave at least 20% and that's on the total bill, tax included. I'll even toss $1.00 into the tip jar at Dunkin Donuts if I only get a cup of coffee. It's probably why I'm broke all the time :rotfl: .

I know I could live on $40 a day and have extra money left over. I eat light healthy meals.

This amount is for food and tip only everything else is on another budget.

She only leaves 15%. thats the going rate in restaurants.

I never throw money in "tip cups," that seem to pop up all over the place: DD, Subway, Stores :confused3 (no lie, when my wife and I were in Boothbay Harbor, we went in to a candy store and there was a tip cup on the counter.) However, I do throw down a minimum tip on small bills. Some restaurants in my ton have lunch specials that are really cheap. I would never leave less than 3.00 no matter what the bill came to.

This argument always comes up when tipping is mentioned, but it doesn't hold water. Doesn't EVERYONE work hard? I know I sure do. My husband certainly does. Yet we tend to put wait staff in a different category because of their unique salary scale.

Tipping is out of control. When I was a kid, 10% was considered a "standard tip". Then suddenly it grew to 20%, which is a huge percentage of the meal.

And before anyone asks, yes, I have waited tables. It was in no way the hardest job (mentally or physically) that I've ever had. In fact, I enjoyed it and the money was very good compared to other unskilled labor jobs that I held during my college years.

Looking back at the original question: the 1.35 tip, it's 15% -- a decent tip. Remember, her show is about eating on a budget. I think it's fine; however, for lunch I would've rounded it up to the nearest .50, so I would've left 1.50 -- not a big difference in cash, but the quarters just "seem nicer" than the smaller change.

I totally agree! I like her but this is the one show of hers I think is a bunch of poo poo. One time, because she was short on money, she had 6 shrimp and a beer for dinner. Nice and healthy, eh? The tipping thing is bad, bad, bad. As a "cook", she should be more supportive of her wait staff.

I agree, DH and I watch the show all the time and we notice the same thing. Yeah, it might be 15%, but it seems like so little to tip under $2. Personally, we would never leave less than $2 for a tip, even if our breakfast was under $10. It just seems like the right thing to do...

I'm pretty sure she's discussed this in the past. She does tip more after the fact it's just the premise of the show $40.00 a day. You COULD do that. I am sure she's not the first person to tip exactly 15% to these people and as someone who waitressed a bit in my youth, I was always just thankful for whatever I got. I never figured out the percentage, etc. I think it's changed a lot since then though. The business she draws it far outweighs the extra dollar she should have left. My husband doesn't like her but we both like that show. We have even had our own $40.00 day in our town trying all new places. :thumbsup2

You guys seriously think people are watching the show, thinking to themselves, "Well, since Rachel Ray only tips exactly 15%, that's what I'm going to do now!" :confused3 :confused3

I think people are smart enough to figure out how to tip on their own (or too dumb to calculate 15% of a bill in the first place :teeth: )

I think the premise of the show is a bit of a joke. She does too many things to "get around" the $40 and day limit - like spending $50 to get to the place she spends $10.
