Best wishes to all. I sure hope it finally gets cooler.

They are having the grand opening of the new bridge/span over to Sanibel Island this weekend. As part of the festivities they are holding a 5K on Saturday morning. I couldn't pass it up as it will be the only time ever that we'll get to run the bridge. So it looks like a fun 5K this weekend.

I drove by there yesterday and WOW, that is a tall bridge. Remember for us Floridians a curb is a pretty big uphill :)

have a great weekend and stay injury free.
Duane

Good luck WISH Team. Go get 'em! :thumbsup2

Good luck this weekend, everyone! :cheer2:

And Duane, I am so jealous -- Sanibel is one of my favorite places on the planet. Is this a second bridge, or did they replace the other one? I haven't been down there for a couple of years (not since before the hurrican and all the damage) but I am hoping we can get down there sometime this winter. You are so lucky to be right there -- and what a beautiful run that will be. Good luck getting over that high bridge!

:lmao: :lmao: Tomorrow is my very first 5K.....I am guarenteed a PB:lmao: :lmao: At least it looks like the weather is cooperating, and since I work for one of the race sponsors I get a $5 gift card for participating:cool1: :cool1:

I'm back and it was great. Only the second year for this event, but they were very organized. The course is mostly on paved surfaces through a forest preserve and very flat. The weather was sunny, but not as terribly hot as it has been. Still felt pretty warm though! My garmin said 47:52 for 3.15 miles at the end, a 15:11 pace, not exactly blazing speed, but good for me. DH and I had a great time, and I think we are going to sign up for another 5K in a couple of weeks.

WOW it was hot today. I ran in the Sanibel Causeway 5K. This was the first and probably only time this race will ever be run. It was the grand opening of the new bridge and causeway to Sanibel.

For any of you familiar with the area, it started in the middle of the causeway, ran towards Ft Myers over the new HUGE bridge, down the other side then an immediate turn around and up over the HUGE bridge again and down the other side. That wasn't the worst of it, we then went for 1.5 miles of dead straight boring road that seemed to go on forever (you could't see the finish). Talked to a lot of people and that was the worst part of the course.

But, it was fun. Ended up at 25:27 which is a 8:12 pace. I had nothing left at the finish. If it went for 10 more yards, I'm not sure I would have made it. OK I would, but I was hurting. Hope everyone had as much fun today as I did.

Oh yea, I did out kick a 9 year old to the finish! 41 years younger than me and I blew her away at the finish. She should be ashamed :)

We also got some media coverage http://www.winknews.com/news/local/9664602.html

enjoy,
Duane

Duane,

Great Effort!! :thumbsup2 Sounded like a really cool race/experience, especially since they may never repeat it.

Speaking as someone who is always made fun of by his friends because he is outkicked by 75 yr-olds :headache: , I'm glad you schooled that 9 yr-old today at the finish!

Pat,

Congratulations on your first 5K! (and the resultant PR :) )

I'm glad you enjoyed the race; I like 5Ks: a good challenge, and they can take the place of a more boring weekend training session--and it comes with a T-shirt!! :woohoo:

Duane, sounds like a neat race. My grandparents live in Bonita Springs, but I'm not sure where the new bridge is. Good job!

Pat -- Every PR is a good PR! Glad you made it through the heat with a smile.

Duane -- A bridge run! Totally cool! Congratulations on the news coverage too. That is a high bridge!!

Love to read those race reports!

Pat - Congrats on your first 5k! So you start off big (with marathons) and work down (to 5k's)? Wow!!

Duane - Sounds like a fun race! You are super speedy!!

I ran a race this weekend at the last minute, so I am not listed. We went camping this weekend and I need to get a long run it. Just by chance I noticed that the neighboring town had a 1 mile and 5K run. I decided that instead of running alone, I would run with some people. This is a very small town and little festival, so I knew it would be a small race.

We got there and registered... and the people were SOOOO nice and thankful that we came from out of town. DD6 and I signed up for the 1 mile and then I did the 5K also. We hung around for a bit, did the potty thing several times and then the race was finally ready to start. DD6 and I lined up and decided to run walk it since she is just starting to run with me. She was really tiring out at the 1/2 way point but I kept her going with mindless chit chat (she likes to talk). We finished in 14:51, her fastest mile yet. She did awesome. right before the finish line dd4 came running out and we all held hands as we crossed the finish line. So cute!!!

Up next, my 5K. Now I have bad luck with 5K in my area because they are small and I run alone. There were maybe 40 people running, mostly young HS -20 something wipper snappers. OH well. So we are off. I settle into my run4/walk1 and realize there are only 3 people behind me and we aren't even at the 1/2 mile point yet. YIKES!! But I keep going and never lose my pace. There is always a guy about a blocks length behind me and I think he was pacing with me. Mile one was OK, I think I did a 11:40ish mile. Mile 2 turned into the all uphill mile. Shortly after the 1 mile mark we started to go uphill and up and up and up. Then shortly after mile 2 there was a descent. YIKES. Mile 2 was 13:15ish, mile 3 was 12:XX something (I don't have my Garmin here to look). I finished in 38:XX minutes with a 12:18 pace. I was happy with that since there was a never ending mile and I haven't done a 5K race since Sept. 2006.

The race overall was fun, the organizers were really nice. DD6 and I both won a door prize and I also placed 3rd in my age group and got a little bitty medal. There weren't many in my age group, but in my book a placing is a placing!!!! I had an older guy come up to me and tell me he loved my shirt. I think he was in the 60-70 year old group and FAST! He said he always tells people that are last in a race that they are faster than everyone sitting at home on their butts! Ain't That the Truth!!!!
