Reporting in the results from my Ten for Texas race this morning.

This was my first race at the ten mile distance, although I have run 5K, 10K and half-marathon distance races before.

The weather was near perfect with clear skies, weather in the mid-60's (degrees F) and fantastic race support.

I was hoping to finish somewhere between 2:10 and 2:15. The race went well, with aid stations every 2 miles or so, one of which had some food as well as drinks. Accelerade and water were available at all stations.

At the finish we were handed bottles of water and/or power-ade. The post race party included Chik Fil A chicken biscuits, breakfast tacos, sodas, beer, Mike's Hard Lemonade, and some other things.

I finished the ten miles in 1:59:34, an average pace of 11:56. A pace I did not expect to make except in the "perfect" race.

I raced the 10K Classic here in Bowling Green this morning. It's a run race without a walker awards catagory, but it's a beautiful course thru old town. It's all old city streets and history abounds.

The weather and conditions were perfect. It was 43 degrees at the start with no wind so it was very pleasent. I wear gloves when it's in the 40s so I had a pair of 50 cent throw aways to use till I was warm enouth then I could toss them. They lasted about a mile.

I had the rare pleasure of doing the race with another racewalker that was going the same pace. I've never had anyone to talk to when I race since everyone is either faster or slower. So we had a nice conversation.

We were averaging 12:30 for the first couple of miles which was his pace, we agreed to pick it up a bit. So we did a few at just under 12:00 mpm. About mile 4 we were passing some girls who had started walking and they decided to try our racewalking technique, we all stayed together for a quarter mile or so then they dropped back to regular walking, that was fun for a while though.

At mile 5 my walking partner said he couldn't hold the pace any more and for me to go ahead. I took off without him and just tried to see how many people I could catch and pass for the last 1.2 miles.

As I was approaching the finish I heard the announcer call out, "Here comes Dave Kirgan, our first place speed walker". Even though there were no awards for the walkers it was nice knowing I was first. There were 4,200 in the race but I don't know how many walkers.

The race draws a good crowd for a small town race because it's a certified course and because of the $10,000 in prize money drawings.

One of my most satisfying races ever didn't win any prize money but had a wonderful race with good company and terrific weather. My pace average was 11:54 per mile and 1:13:51 clock time. I don't have a clue about chip time since, like a good little walker I started in the back. It's fun to start in the back because you are constantly passing people the whole race and not getting passed.

Thanks for listening.

That is just way too awesome! :yay:

And I SO need to do a race like tiberius where they give you Mike's Hard Lemonade at the finish! :drinking1
Can you imagine how speedy I could be? :rotfl:
