Today was the grand finale for the Mid-Bay Bridge 4.5 run/walk. This event had been held for the past 15 years. However, participant size and safety concerns were the primary reasons it's been discontinued.
Arrived on the northside of the bridge around 0650. Buses would transport participants to the southside and the starting line. Met up with the rest of the team and waited, and waited, and waited. Too many people and not enough transportation.
Finally made it to the southside of the bridge around 0800 (scheduled start time). Waited a little longer and then started moving to the starting line.
The horn sounds and we're off. We maneuver ourselves to the left and start the trek across the bridge. Mile 1 - 11:22. Around the 1.5 mile mark we start the climb to the hump. Mile 2 - 11:26. Hit the apex and start the downhill side. Mile 3 - 11:35. Make it off of the bridge and pass the last waterstop. Mile 4 - 11:55. Last 1/2 a mile was uneventful. Mile 4.5 - 4:59. Total time was 51:18 for a 11:31 pace.
All-in-all, a pretty nice race. The weather was perfect, and even though there were a lot of people participating, there we no signifcant bottle necks once we got out on the course.
Haven't heard what the future plans are, if there are any.
I'd run it again.
