GO WISH TEAM GO!!! Can't wait to read the reports after the races!

Hi Everyone,

I ran in the Sharon Timlin 5K for ALS today. It is in Hopkinton, MA - the same Hopkinton in which the Boston Marathon starts. I took a slight detour on the way to the race to pass through downtown Hopkinton and see the Starting line which is still painted on the road. The next time I'm there maybe I'll be running over that Start. Yeah, right!!

Sharon Timlin was the mother of Mike Timlin the pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and she died of ALS. There were several of the Red Sox pitchers at the race and their 2 catchers as well to sign autographs. There were many Family Fun activities going on after the race. Unfortunately, my family couldn't join me at the race since my DS5 had a T-ball game.

The weather was a bit toasty this morning, despite the 9AM start. We haven't had much warm weather this Spring, so I haven't had many training runs in the heat. I set a goal of 28:00 which was around 9 min/mile. My BIL has run the race before and warned that the 1st mile is very fast due to the downhill start, then from 1 to 2 it was uphill and then fairly flat to the end.

There were over 800 runners in this race. I lined up at the 9:00 pace and the race began. I tried to reign it in a bit the first mile but because of the downhill and the excitement of the race I went through mile 1 at 8:19. I was feeling a bit winded, but decided to try to maintain that pace on the hills. Mile 2 was a 8:27. Midway through the 3rd mile I was completely on fumes, but just tried to keep the pace. Mile 3 was 8:23 and I finished in 26:27. I am very happy about that.

After the race I lined up for a free 10 min massage which was very nice. I probably should have gotten in line to get autographs for my son, but decided to take advantage of being there solo. By the time I was done with the massage the Red Sox players had left in their stretch Escalade. Oops, no Best Mommy Ever awards coming my way today.

It was a nicely run race and I'll definately put in on my schedule again.

Cindy, what a wonderful time. Sounds like you had a great race, thank you for sharing.

Way to go Cindy. Good time. It seems like going out faster than is comfortable usually works out for a good time. Way to go. You should make a day trip for the Johnny Kelley race in New London, CT (11.6) on August 4. Its free and the beach at the finish is pretty nice.

Anyway, I had a Thursday race this week. This week's cause was raising money for a church. As usual the race was not the important part of my story. During my warm up, I had a blow out in my compression shorts. (I wear them because I have a lot of extra thy since losing a lot of weight). I start chafing during the warm up and get back to the start line just as the preacher is finishing his prayer for a safe race. Within seconds of returning to the start line, they start the race. At a mile 1 I had a good pace going but my cottage cheese thy was starting to really burn. I made the decison that there would be other races and I let the group I was running with pull away. That was tough. I had to bunch my shorts up on the outside of my leg and try to pull my thy's apart so they would not rub together. This was fairly successful but meant that I was only running with one hand. I must say that It was kind of fun to run a race at a relaxed pace. The race was 3.8 miles and since I have never run that distance in a race before -- PR! 33:30 something. About 9 minute pace. Best of all, I was home about 10 minutes after the race ended. Really close to home.

I hope everyone else had a good weekend.
Scott

Cindy - What a great race! Congrats on the awesome pace.
Scott - Way to go on the PR! Sorry to hear about the shorts issue though.

I just got word that a grizzly and her two cubs have been spotted in the area that we are supposed to run our 10K in Banff tomorrow, so we will be going with the backup route through town. Too bad....I was looking forward to running through Sundance Canyon. Also the rain continues all day today, tonight, tomorrow morning....so it is going to be a wet one. Unfortunately they won't even have a secure gear check at the start/finish. We aren't allowed to park at the start/finish, we have to park elsewhere and take a shuttle to the start. That is going to make things a bit of a hassle and it would be great to have some dry clothes to put on right after the race.

Leana,
That's weak. You Canadians are scared of a little grizzles and her cubs. Just run down hill so they can't chase you.;)
Scott

Cindy - WTG. Great pace.

Scott - Congrats with the PR. Sorry about the shorts.

Cindy--Great race! Awesome time too!!

Scott--Great job on the race!! Sorry to hear about the shorts.

Can't wait to hear from everyone else who ran this weekend!!

Well, the race out in Banff today was a wet one. This race was supposed to go through Sundance Canyon, but thanks to a recent spotting of a grizzly with her two cubs we were sent out on the backup route instead. Probably a good thing too, because even running along the roads, things were WET.... It was a pretty cool morning - I don't think it got above 39 deg the whole time I was out in Banff this morning. There was to be no parking at the start (or so we were told), so everyone was supposed to park at the CP Rail station and catch a shuttle, departing every 15 min starting at 8:30. Or so we thought. I was there right at 8:30, got on the shuttle with another fellow, only to have the driver step on board and inform us that he couldn't leave until the shuttle was full. Some 22 more people later. Some more folks showed up and we contemplated all driving to the start regardless as the shuttle driver was basically informing us that if not enough people showed up, he wouldn't take us at all. Hmmm. We were a bit worried that the rain would keep a lot of folks away, but luckily within 30 min we got our required number and took off for the start. Only to see a bunch of other people filling into the parking lot at the start which we thought we weren't supposed to do...

Anyhow, I grabbed my shirt right away as there were only 201 shirts available, but 275 people had entered. Didn't want to miss out on my shirt! The great thing about wet weather starts is it really brings the camaraderie out in people. I had a great time chatting with new friends as we waited in the shelter for the race to start.

At 10:00 we were off, running the streets of Banff. Like last week we had some issues with cars, some folks driving too fast past us runners. There were great, enthusiastic volunteers. I especially like the last runner pace bike - every time I passed him he would shout out to "Go number 26!" Thanks to the cool weather and the rain I was running pretty fast, but even still, I wound up in sight of the finish line much sooner than I anticipated. It turns out that when they had to rework the route it came out a bit short. The worst part about the route was the track we were supposed to run on at the very finish. It was kind of black sand and it was oversaturated with water, as was the grass around it. I tried to run on the grass, but kept sinking in, making it hard to sprint for the finish line. I couldn't believe it when I finished in 1:00:09, a PR for me, but unfortunately on a short course. I measured 5.88 miles.

Here we go...the good, the bad, and the ugly from today's race:

The UGLY:
- My shoes!! Check out the photo of our route into the finish line.

The BAD:
- The shuttle at the start - and then the shuttle at the end! The driver never showed up, so a few of us had to take a cab back to the parking lot.
- Not quite the 6.2 mi for a true PR....
- So overcast you couldn't see the mountains.

The GOOD:
- The race volunteers, and all the enthusiastic runners that were out there.
- The swag bag was awesome, and the shirt was really nice. Hopefully with no shows thanks to the weather there weren't any disappointed people who didn't get their shirts.

All in all, it was actually a really fun day. Afterwards a few of us met in Canmore at the Grizzly Paw micro-brew pub for a rewarding lunch. What a blast.

Time to go stretch and catch a nap...

I swear I will write a race report ASAP. I am on business in MN and I have to do some work ASAP that I've neglected to date due to my marathon travels. My official time was:

4:29:38

The weather conditions at Grandma's made WDW '07 look mighty tame. Mid-eighties the whole race with no relief of shade the entire 26.2 miles.

I thought of you guys often and it really pulled me through:grouphug: . Thanks for being there in spirit!!

Congratulations, that is a really great result. Any chance of you duplicating that pace on January 13, 2008, dragging me with you?

Enjoy friendly minnesota.

Cindy, great event. You were flyin’ Congratulations!

Scott, sorry about the sausage pants issue. You were still flyin’ to me in spite of your little side show.

Leana, sorry about the grizzly thing. Yuck on the rain, but the pics are good. I love pics! Glad your after event was fun.

Sara, that is a fantastic time and the weather was not friendly. Wow! You are amazing.

I didn’t realize Anne listed my name as an event participant. Well, I guess it was an event! After getting up at 6:00 a.m. Thursday that was the last I slept until noon on Saturday. Our Relay For Life event went quite well. We had LOTS of steps in, had fantastic weather, stayed up all night, played—walked—repeat, and raised lots to donate to the American Cancer Society. I finally feel human again and now I’m planning to get back to some routine or other. I know you all won't believe this, but I didn't take any pics.

I look forward to the remainder of the WISH Team reports.

Craig - Colleen and I are going to try for a 4:30 at MCM in October so we'll surely be shooting for the same pace at WDW '08 and would love to share the ride with you:woohoo:.
