So, I did a charity 5K walk this morning. I thought it would be a good way to get some miles in. It was sponsored by a local preschool, and featured the required radio station remote and Miss New Jersey (!) [she's an asthmatic, apparently, and owes her success to it, or something...it was just a good reminder to me to use my inhaler].

First, it was filled with toddlers and preschoolers, probably because they were hosting. Portapot at the start. I was the only one stretching. Some grownups in workout clothes. Lots of parents showing of Peg Perego strollers and such. Lots of people in jeans and t-shirts/sweats.

Elmo, Scooby Doo, and Dora were at the start and they also were on the course cheering us on--which makes it more characters than the 5K at the Minnie. We walked to the nearby elementary school, made 8 laps around the field, and walked back. I didn't really keep track of my time (but my pedometer says 49 minutes--I don't think I pushed that hard). I did run into my neighbor and her family so I walked with them for a bit. Nice to catch up--we live across the street from each other and never really have time to talk (they have a preschooler and both work).

After the race, Elmo met us at the finish line and the post-race snacks included veggies and dip, hot dogs, pizza, and peppers and sausage. I missed the line for fresh fruit cups. They also had cotton candy and plenty of water. I have to say, it was awkward being by myself (although I hung out with the neighbors after the race), but it was a great event for families.

Great cause, beautiful weather (sunny and 66). And I got in my 3 miles for the day. And I picked up cotton candy for DH. Win, win, win. :)

Woohoo! My first local event! And I finished!

Good Day folks! So I'm just back from my Selma Race to Read 5K! It is benefiting the local Middle School so it's mostly the teachers and a dozen or so middle school kids... I'm not exactly sure how many participants there were...Less than 70 I think.

Now...mind you...I haven't done anything since the Minnie--two weeks ago!

My sister in law and I head out around 8 am this mornig. This is her first 5K! Let me tell you...She is a walker and she is speedy! There is not much fan fare...We get there, register and just hang out til 9am. Come 9am they announce for us to get to the starting line. We line up...gun shot...and we're off! She's walking and I start off walking and then transition to slow a jog to say with her. As we're about 50 feet into the race, we pass Matt and Jordan (my nephew). They had driven the old car (66 Iimpala) to Cracker Barrel for breakfast and had come to the sidelines to cheer us.

This was an out and back, in town, very small race. I did well considering I've done nothing for two weeks. A few times I told my SIL to go ahead and I'd catch up. She is walking! We make it...I sprint to the finish to make a new PR... 42:58 to beat my Minnie 5K time (43:10).

We hang out for the awards... I was hopeful. As mentioned...there were very few folks there. We chat and then it's award time! We wait as they go through the 12 and under...then teens...then 20-29 age group. 3rd place is announced...Nope not me... but wait....That girl finished after me! 2nd Place...It's me!!!! Yay! As I said...minimal people. I think there may have ONLY been 3 folks in my age group! lol! My SIL got 3rd place in her age group! How exciting! Her first race and first trophy!

Matt had considered the race, but when given the option of a boys breakfast with his father, brother, newphew and neighbor and running the 5K...He chose food! Too bad. There was only ONE guy in his age group. He would have totally gotten a trophy. I bet he is secrety jealous of mine. lol!

So...Selma is a small town and this was the Middle School's first 5K they put on which they said they hope to now do annually. Next year I may have a little more competition.

Oh...This was my first local event...All thus far have been Disney! Also...there was one teen who wore jeans and Sperry's...One woman who wore rainbow flip flops. I assume she was just doing the health-walk, but when she crossed the finished line she said "I have a blister now." Really? Imagine that.

Overall it was descent course...good company and trophy to boot! A Good Morning!

Check me out below showing off my trophy!

Thanks, Tracy!

Woohoo! Nice trophy, Stacy!

My mom called before and I told her I had walked the 5K this morning and I'm getting ready to go to a wedding...and she said she's proud of me! She said she's really proud that I've set goals and I keep getting out there (I come from a family of couch potatoes). Woohoo! She usually says, "I knew you could do it," but today she said she was proud!

Nice job Duckie!! Sounds like they had quite the spread there at the finish :)

Way to go Stacie!! I posted in your journal, but I'll say it again here....I'm so proud of you and your accomplishments!! A new PR, earning that trophy (it's not just one race, it's a culmination of the hard work you put into getting yourself to that point)...you've definitely caught the bug :goodvibes:

Good luck to everyone else running...HAVE FUN out there!!

Duckie -- good job getting those miles in -- and cool that they had characters.

Stacie -- Man, I love every photo you post! You and your husband make the most adorable couple (Minnie photos), and your trophy photo really illustrates your sparkling personality. Keep 'em coming! Congrats!
