Good luck WISHers! :goodvibes

I'm doing a 5K tomorrow morning. Total last minute sign up for me. It's the 6th Annual Police & Fire Dept Run in Las Vegas, NV. I'm hoping to make a new PR.

Today, I ran in the Woodland Walahatchee 10K. My time was 1:06:23-11 seconds over my PR. It was overcast, about 80 degrees, no breeze, and HUMID. You almost had to cut a hole through the air to run through it! This was my first "small" (less than 500 participants) race ever and it was fun. I prefer the big ones but I liked this one in its own way.

The race course is an out and back on a relatively flat, no intersection country road. The support is at the 5k turnaround and at the 10k turnaround-water, Gatorade, and iced-water soaked sponges which were life savers!!!! The scenery was beautiful, very large pastures with grazing horses, cows and even the occasional goat. This was by far the most "suck it up" race that I have ever run, though, because of the weather and no support in the forms of bands/crowd/ other runners to talk to; there weren't that many of us that even did the 10k, most did the 5k so it was lonely toward the back of the pack on the long route. One thing that I'm very proud of is that on the way out, I took it very easy and on the way back in, I let my "competitive monster" out. I passed 9 people in the second half of the race, including one guy about 11 times according to him (he passed me 10 then couldn't keep up :goodvibes which feels good to a slow guy).

It was a great way to start a weekend and I'm glad that I did it and will do it again next year. As a newbie to the endurance athletics world, I've really fallen in love with it. The fast folks are just as nice to the slow folks as they are to each other. The post-race celebration was just neat and fun in the sponsoring Church's fellowship hall, complete with homemade treats that were GOOD (especially the peach cobbler). This such a great community that we all belong to. Keep moving forward, y'all!!!!

Ed great race, cool to be close to a PR in the heat and humidity. Great time to. Thanks for sharing.

I love the small local races for competition and the big ones for the experience. It's all good.

Ed - great time on your 10-K, especially in this heat and humidity. Good job!!!! Those little sponges come in handy in weather like this!!!! :thumbsup2

Casey and Bryan - hope your races go well for you!!! :cheer2:

Congratulations, Ed on a great race and time!

My 5K went well. Although not at all scenic and super hot desert temps as expected. I finished it at 28:41. I was trying to beat my PR of 28:14 but the already early morning 100 degree weather made it a challenging run for me. I gave it my all. I did enjoy passing up two men in the end that were ahead of me the whole run, though. When the weather cools off, I'll beat that PR.

My husband snapped off a few photos during the run:

Ed & Casey Those were some great runs that you 2 had. I am definitely the slow one of the bunch.

I had my race yesterday morning, my first one. I was somewhat worried about it as well. I knew I could handle the distance but I was worried about pace. I wanted to do well, actually I just didn't want to embarrass myself. I guess I succeeded in doing that since I was able to beat my best time by doing 35 minutes flat. My previous best was 43:30 minutes.

What did I learn from my first race? A lot. I didn't run a smart race. I ran an ego driven race. I was so caught up in trying to prove that I "belonged" in the race that I did a lot more jogging/running than what I had trained to do. Which in result to that, today I am very sore. I also learned that I am not in as good of shape that I had thought or hoped. I am in good shape but the people who go out and run a race often have earned a new level of respect from me.

I am looking forward to my next race, though so I need to get some more training in soon.

Thanks everyone!
Bryan

This is the post of the results for the 5k race from Saturday. My goal was to not finish last. Technically, I succeeded and failed at the same time. Although there was several people that finished with a slower time than I. I did have the slowest time for my age group, 30-39 male. What really hurts, as I have already mentioned, this was my fastest time yet.

Bryan you were only 58 seconds slower than me. When I did my first run race as a pure walker I was dead last and had the police car on my butt so everyone knew I was last.

Hey Bubba,

Man, just keep going and keep training. Now that you have some race experience, you now know what you need to work on. Turn you (perceived) weakness into your strength and then develop a racing strategy and go do it. In my race, it was suggested that to me that I should "dog it" for the 1st 3 miles and then, do everything I could to pass people all the way back; in other words, finish strong. Even though I didn't PR, I enjoyed finishing that way; passing people. I just wish that I didn't take it as easy as I did for the 1st half; oh well. It was still fun.

Hey guys.

I just found this thread, and wanted to give some encouragement to my fellow Yetis. The three of us will be running a 5k in Louisville on Aug 23. It will be Gibby's first, my second, and Brian's second race since a multi-year layoff from running.

Brian and I ran in my first 5k at the end of July. It was a small turnout (less than 150), and we finished 3rd and 4th in our age division, with times just under 25:23. I hope to do as well on Saturday, prove that time wasn't a fluke.

But all of this is just a tuneup for the main event, the EEC. I don't know if I can comprehend a field of runners as large as the Disney events draw. I think I heard on another thread that there could be as many as 1400 runners. Yikes!

See you in September!

Chris
