:jumping1: GO! WISH Team GO! :jumping1:

We are back from the Reindeer Run. This was the 5k for my daughters Girls on the Run group. There were probably close to 50 young girls (4-7th grade) participating. Since it was my DD's first race, this was not a competitive race for me. DD stayed with 2 friends, both are asthmatic so we ran short bits and walked. Unfortunately the other girls were not dressed appropriately (ugg boots are not good for running). DD wanted to run more, but I was the adult in charge of these kids so we walked more. Our official time was 49:20 and I was so proud of DD, she ran hard the last .25 mile, finished strong.

I may opt to run this race next year. No shirt (they ran out) but a great course-starts at the bottom of a small hill, then its flat and fast with only 3 turns. I could definately PR this one. At the end, OH BOY!!! All homemade cookies, cake, brownies etc. Some fruit, bagels, hot chocolate and coffee too. I hadn't seen that many cookies anywhere in a long time!

Good luck to all the other WISHers running this weekend!!

Well, I am now officially a Marathoner

The number one thing I learned at the race was what my coach told me when I started stating goal times in the BQ range, respect the distance. Until you've run a marathon, you don't know what it feels like at mile 21.

Finish time 3:59:39. 21 out of 91 in my age group, 192 out of 995 women, 792 out of 2500 overall.

I'm happy to have finished to be honest. I was on pace for a 3:35 through mile 15 and for a 3:40 through mile 20. At mile 21 I hit the wall and got a major knot in my calf (and I NEVER cramp) to the point where I could barely move. Then there were hills every bleeping mile between 19-26 (litterally a hill at the 26 mile mark). The medic who looked at my leg said considering the tension I'm lucky I didn't tear anything. The good news is I know part of it was from the hills and not stretching. Considering how long I stayed on pace, horrible training directly before (the fact that I had two weeks of next to no training [not a normal taper just not running/ training] and a sick week the week before), and the hills, I think getting my BQ at Disney won't be a problem. In fact, I think it will make it even better.

Despite the race not going as planned and thinking I may die and why on earth did I do this multiple times, I can hardly wait to do it again.

Congrats on the marathon!!! I am hoping to run one in the future, the Disney half will only be my second half so I am going to hold out on a full for a while.

Silly question, but I keep seeing "BQ"-what does it stand for:confused3

BQ = Boston Qualify. Qual times range from 3:10 on up for males, depending on age, 3:40 on up for females, depending on age

Thanks timmac for clarifying. Never occured to me, don't think I will BQ in my lifetime!!

I have to do a marathon in 2:25 to BQ......and i've done it twice now.:cool1:

Plam beach was great, about 40 chairs all together.
The course was nice excpet two VERY tight turn arounds I fell of at one and had to do a six point turn at the other!!!!

I had a really nice lady escort who I talked with most of the way, and I could hear her radio so I could hear where the other women when on the course.:thumbsup2

I came in secound in 2:02:11.
The same lady that beat me last week at Space coast won.
I'm going to get her one day, when we first met ant MCM she won by 24 mins, now she's only winning by 2.5 / 3 mins. She even said to me after the race that I was "getting too close" :lmao:

Hope my description didn't leave you feeling left out, wasn't intented! Nice job, by the way!

Not at all.

I know how hard it is to make a BQ, I have to watch my speedo all the time!

I'll repeat NEVER say never. I am only 15 minutes out from Boston. I was almost 4 hours away when I started this journey. This is a retrench year due to a few bike wrecks. Next year is an IM year, assuming a shoulder heals up. Then I am pushing the runs up for a BQ attempt again.

Try not. Do or do not, there is no try.

wellesleyprincess, congratulations on your marathon. Hope you do get your BQ time soon.

Vern, sounds like a good way to get the young gals interested in something healthy. Hope that this will be the start of something good for many of the young ones. Congratulations to you for mentoring them.

I did LV and PR'd! It was a good event for me and the weather being cooler really helped. This was an inauguaral event for RnR and being able to meet up with friends at various times made it more fun. For the half, it was almots an out and back on Las Vegas Blvd and quite a flat course. I took my own bottle of water (Amphipod) and carried my own Gatorade bottle so I kept pace through the water stops for most of the event. I don't think it made my pace and PR, the cooler weather did that. Since it was a flat course, I would recommend this to anyone. There were some issues with supplies along the way, logistics on bag-check and getting people properly to the corrals. I found it entertaining to see the running Elvis participants. There were several who were having vow renewals or wedding ceremonies along the course.

You are right, never say never. Who knows what the future holds?

Great marathon reports! Couple of folks getting close to BQ.

We finally got home from Las Vegas. Left yesterday at 7:40 AM and got home today at 11:50 AM. Couple of plane malfunctions and a night in Dallas. Yahoo!

Anyway it was a great race. I feel bad as I didn't meet up with any Wishers. I left my home computer at home and it had the cell phone numbers in it, I thought. Only yesterday did I realize that they were online in my private messages - DUH! So, I didn't get to see anyone.

On Saturday we did the Great Santa Run. They were trying to set a record for the most Santa's at a race. http://www.lasvegassantarun.org/ Great time (but cold).

Friday around noon I went to the Expo. Very well organized, sped right through. They gave out a nice black LV tech shirt. I like it. I had to move corrals as they had me in 14 since I originally was going to run as Elvis. But I had trouble finding a suit. OK, I found a suit but had trouble spending $120 for a one time use Elvis suit. Just couldn't spend the money so I ran as me. Anyway they didn't even ask for proof at the corral change and moved me to 6. Never even looked at our numbers when we went into the corrals either. Anyway, the expo was nice although a lot smaller than Disney I thought. Prices bout the same :)

First part of the EXPO was all the Vegas themed stuff. All I bought was a magnet. They had a cool hat but I don't wear hats. By Saturday I thought more about it and went back to buy the hat. There were none. Oh well, I had the chance of Friday. They also had a matching jacket for $90 but I had to pass on that too. I rarely wear a jacket down here.

Race morning was -12 degrees. OK, it was closer to the high 30's or low 40's but for a Florida boy that might as well have been -12. Got up at 3:30 and drove over to the MGM to park since it was the closest hotel on my side of the strip (couldn't drive across the strip). There were hundreds of marathoners at the MGM. I think this was the kick off hotel for one of the charity groups. I followed the crowds and took the sissy way to the start. Over to Excalibur then took the tram to Mandalay Bay then walk though the hotel/convention area to get close to the start. Nice having real bathrooms along the way :)

I walked around the staging area for a while but didn't see anyone I knew. I waited until the last 20 minutes to turn in my checked bag. I had on 2 pair of running pants and a pair of shorts, a long sleeve shirt with two running jackets, a stocking cap they gave out and a hat and gloves. All I took off was the extra pair of sweat pants. I also packed a dry shirt it the bag - came in handy!

About 15 minutes before the start I went to my corral. No problem getting in. Celine Dion sang American the Beautiful then Cher sang the Star Spangled Banner. They started the elite women about 10 or 15 minutes before the men so they could basically meet at the finish. Not sure how that turned out. Had a few fireworks but not that impressive.

At the start they started one wave at a time. Had the next wave move up then started them. Kind of neat as each wave had it's own start but I am sure it slowed down the start. I was about 4 minutes behind the clock time. I wanted to go for a PR in this race as it was flat and cold. Not to be, missed by 5 minutes. Right from the start I didn't feel "fresh". I kept the pace for the first 8 miles but couldn't keep it up. Not sure what it was, the 10 days of over eating in Vegas, the cold (really affected my lungs but not that bad until later), or probably the main reason is that I am not in as good of shape as I thought I was.

Anyway they start you out going South away from the main strip for close to a mile then you turn and go North right down Las Vegas Blvd! This was pretty neat. Plenty of fan support, awesome sights, great bands every mile or so and plenty of water stations along the way. We went North a little past the Stratosphere but not quite to downtown. That would have been neat. Made a big turnaround over a few blocks then straight back to Mandalay Bay. Basically an out and back which was fine as we were on the strip.

Right about mile 11, I think it was, they have the full go off to the right out into the suburbs and the half folks stay on the strip. I was so glad I was doing the half. Couldn't have done a full that day. Up until now I could still see runners coming up the strip. There were a lot of people there. It wasn't until around mile 11 that I stopped seeing people on the other side. It was also neat seeing the elite runners coming up the strip. Man are they fast!

This was my first big race outside of Disney. I thought they did a great job. Actually liked the idea I could show up literally 10 minutes before the start and still get into my corral with plenty of time. Plenty of bathrooms right by the start and no issue getting back into your corral. That was nice. Everything was right there. Bag drop, restrooms, coffee and start.

If I had to do it again, even though this time I had no choice, I would go out race weekend then vacation after the race. I really think the 10 days vacation prior hurt the race effort. Had a great time even though I didn't meet up with anyone. We'll meet up in Disney!

Would I do it again? Maybe if I was going out around that time. I wouldn't go just for the race though. I think the only disappointment was the race was run in daylight. By the time we all go to the strip it was daytime so the hotels weren't all lit up or if they were it didn't matter much.

Just checked - you can see yourself cross the finish line. What an awesome feature! http://las-vegas.competitor.com/features/finishreplay/ Just type in my bib 14724 and you can see the finish. I am in a black running suit with a red jacket unzipped.

Thanks for reading.

Congrats everyone on their races this past weekend.

Me and my neice are doing a 1 mile race tomorrow before the Christmas parade. I have wanted to do it for the last 2 years but didn't want to do it by myself. Now that I am getting my niece into running she is more than willing to do it with me. :thumbsup2
