Alarm was set for 2:45, but I was up at 2:20 and got ready, we were out the door at 3:20 as we had to meet the team at a different hotel at 3:45. We got there on time, but they were running late!!
We were told to put on our hazard lights and drive in convoy to the special parking that had been arranged for us. A mass of about 25 cars took to the roads of Miami.
When we got near the race area we had problems, the police would not let us through, and they sent us around in circles. Some team members got through the barricades, but most of us didn’t. We had been told that we would need to be in the start corals by 5:30, at 5:20 we were still pleading with the PD to let us through. Eventually we were aloud through one of the barricades and got to the intercontenal hotel and parked. The only problem was that the rest of the team were not there??
We got out and started heading to the start, we knew that we had a team tent somewhere and kept asking race officials were to go and they new nothing. We headed to the start line and when we got there only 2 others had made it. There were 58 disabled runners in this race, not all with our team, but most were.
While sitting at the start line the RD came over to say hi and I told him what had happened and that he needs to get this sorted for next year!
Then I saw Tracy, which made my morning, to see her standing the other side of the barricade wishing me luck.
Eventually some of the team arrived and settled in to the corral, the national anthem was sung and we were meant to go……but we were held as more team members were on there way!!!
Finally we were given our count down and we were off. I had not looked at a map for this race and had no idea as to where we were going!! I did my usual hang back and I was last to cross the start line. I soon realised that we would be starting with a bridge, hill work, not a strong point for me, but I was overtaking people!!!! On the hill I picked up my cycle escort and we were off. I soon discovered that my Speedo was not working, but my escort kept me informed, I was pulling a steady 15.5 mph. I told him that I had gone out a little fast, but I would try to keep it going as long as possible!!!!
There is one lady who has beaten me in every race we have been in and I wanted to try to catch her, if I could keep her in sight and finish as close to her as I could I would be happy. I caught sight of her around mile 9, I think. I started gaining and eventually I was passing her at 16.5 mph. I could not believe it I had passed her!!!!! Now I was determined to keep my lead, but I discovered that my water tube was not working, all I had was electrolyte, not going in 71 heat and 97% humidity. My escort asked what was wrong and the next thing I knew I had a cup of water in my hand.
We chugged along and suddenly we heard a ping sound and my front wheel started making very funny noises, my escort tried to see what was wrong as we were moving, but I told him that unless it falls off I’m not stopping.
I must admit that we both thought that it was going to come off and I was telling “cranks” to get me home.
We carried on overtaking people, including the Para- Olympic lady, who today was racing in a push rim. I did not realise it was her at the time, as I knew that she would beat me. Even though we are in different chairs, because of the difference in our athletletic ability, I knew that she would beat me. I was so happy when my Dh saw her at the start and said that she was in push rim, as she is the world’s number 1 female cranker!!!!!
My escort took photos of me along the course and he is emailing them to me, I have never had a lead do this before, but I thought it was really sweet of him. He was excited that he had the lead female, I don’t think that he would have ever thought that when he picked me up on the bridge, a long way back from the front of the packers who were off In the distance.
A couple of the water stops were not ready so he told me to keep going and stopped to get an empty cup from them, he caught me up and took of his own water bottle and filled up the cup for me. He did this several times, and in the end as the cup had worn through he passed me his bottle. If it had not been for him getting me water I don’t think I would have kept hold of my lead.
Just before mile 26 they throw in a hill, my lead said that he was not allowed to come with me to the finish line, he would leave once we got to the top of the hill and he would meet me back at the team tent…..he knew where it was!!!!
I approached the finish line on the right hand shoute, the ½ marathoners where coming in on the left, I pulled as hard as I could to try for a sprint finish and I was shouting and groaning. Think of the noises the female tennis players make and you will get the idea.
I crossed the finish line and forget to look at the clock!!!!!! Our team manager / captain was there and she shouted out 1st Miami marathon and 1st female. I could not believe that I had done it. I looked around for my Dh, but he was not there. One of the team helpers lifted me on to the exit ramp and then another walked me to our tent, where I finally saw my Dh. My Dd came running up to me and my Dh was surprised, he did not expect me back so soon!!!
My escort was waiting for me and I thanked him, he said about my front wheel and we could not see anything obvious, my Dh is going to have to look at it today as I’m racing again next weekend, and if it needs to go back to hed I don’t have much time. Unfortunately I only have one set of race wheels.
I changed chairs and went to wait for my free massage. I need coke, but there was none around!!! Only water and a drink that I could not have because of allergies, luckily I had some chocolate soya milk in my race bag. We went over to the info tent to ask if I need to stay for the award ceremony. I was told yes.
I was sat next to the para Olympian, I told my Dh to take a photo as this would be the only time I’m every on the podium with one. They announced the winners and we were not given anything, they even forgot to mention the para Olympian until she complained!!! I asked the Rd why we had to be there if they are not going to give us anything, and he said that we will get something, but they did not have it ready at the time. The only disabled prize they had was for the male push rim!!!!!
When I got back to the team tent our leader said about our prizes including $$$$. I said that nothing was ready and that they said that they would mail us something, but they said nothing about money…….time will tell.
This weekend I was racing as a member of the Achilles International team, we had members from Columbia and Brazil at this race, and even though there was a language barrier we all got on great and had a fanstic time. My next race with the team will be A1A, Feb. 21. I’m sure that it’s going to be a fight as the lady I beat will be out for revenge……keep your fingers crossed for me!!!!!!
