I read in another thread that the Wild Half has been cancelled due to hurricane. Stay safe, Atlantic coasters!

That's correct, the Wild Half, and almost every other racing event this weekend in the mid-Atlantic, is cancelled.

Now the hard decision is...do I sign up for a November half to replace it?

Beth - I'm thinking of signing up for the half at Rehoboth Beach in DE. The race is Sat. December 10th. I'm going to use it as my final tune-up for the Goofy.

I ran my first marathon today! I ran a 5:35 full, which was better than I expected since my main goal was to finish in the 7 hour time limit. The course was constant hills for all 26.2 miles, and it was almost 90 degrees at the finish. I already filled out my post race survey and said I wouldn't do it next year if the event was in August.

Heather, that's awesome - congratulations!

My best friend ran her first marathon on Labor Day several years ago and it was miserable. What makes organizers think this time of year is good for a marathon?

Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing about the time of the year they chose for the event, but I signed up to run the race, so who's the real crazy one? The company that chose to put on the race, or the racers who actually signed up to run it?:rotfl: It was their first year doing the event, and between the marathon and 50k option that ran yesterday there were only 200 people running. I hope several people mention changing the time of year because the race swag was awesome, and the on course support was phenomenal. I can also now say I've run a marathon with Dean Karnazes, although sadly he beat me:rotfl:

Congratulations!!!! For both finishing and beating your goal!! W00t!!!

Heather, that's awesome! Congratulations. You're 2/3 of the way to your Goofy medal!!!!!:cheer2:

Congratulations Heather!

I'm bummed as I was scheduled to do the Wild Half today at the Jersey Shore. But Irene had other ideas. Although trying to run in 40+ mph winds would not have been fun!

Terri

Congrats Heather!

Terri, if you're talking about the RB Marathon on December 10th, I can vouch for the race. I run a lot of races with the group that puts it on, and they're always good events. It's a very pretty (and flat!) course as well.

Yes, Beth. That's the race in Rehobeth Beach. That will knock Delaware off my list.

Terri

Congratulations to those of you who ran and I'm sorry about the cancelled races.

Stitchfan18: Some races are held at warmer times of the year specifically to make them harder and more of a challenge. Look at the Ironman World Championships in Kona. They could run it at a cooler time but want it to be 90+ degrees with 90+ humidity.

All I did last weekend was a local 5k but I did it with one of my cousins and 3 of my first cousins once removed (I have one of those dago families with a cousin older than my aunt). 4 of the 5 of us placed and the only reason the 5th didn't was because he paced his little brother. The time that won his age group was more than a minute slower than the slowest 5k's he's done in years. It was a lot of fun doing a race with family.

I know that's the case for some races. My guess with this race was that they chose the date in order to avoid conflicting with other major races in the area. We already have a huge fall marathon, and at least one fairly large spring 1/2. In the post race survey they asked about changing the time of year that the event was held, and when we would like to see it held next year. At least the 90's on Saturday were cooler than it'll be today!
