:goodvibesI just can't decide-we have the opportunity to adobt a 2 yr old American Fuzzy Lop from the humane society for $30, includes his neutering-or a female unspayed 1 yr old mini lop for $10 from an individual. What would you do?

We have had rabbits(1 at a time) for a few years now, so I know what I'm getting into. I would love to avoid constant shedding, that's my biggest complaint about our last bunny. We had him 3 yrs, and he just passed. Unbelievably, he learned how to open our sunroom door with his teeth and got outside, never to return alive....the kids are very sad. ANyway-any advice on these 2 breeds? Especially shedding and temperment. Thanks!!!

In my experience unspayed/unbred female rabbits are often nasty creatures -- biting etc . . .. The males I've known have been sweet cuddly lovebugs by comparison. So, knowing nothing about the two breeds I'm voting for the male. But I'd go meet him and make sure he's not an exception to the rule.

The fact that he's a rescue is an added bonus.

I'm with Mickey'snewest on this one. My girl is very dominant and can be snippy and she has been fixed. But, I have had girls that were just as sweet as my boy (I have only had 1 boy). At least with the male you know he was checked out. BTW, I paid $100 to have my male neutered, so you are saving quite a bit.

I had a female and had her fixed. It cost $80, I believe. I read that it is important to have a female rabbit fixed because uterine cancer is the #1 killer of female bunnies.

That being said, I'd go for the $30 rescue bunny that is fixed. You will be off to a great start. Think of all the extra nibbles you can buy for that!

We've had two female bunnies (one spayed and one not) and they were the sweetest, most loving creatures. Our current girl is a Himalayan and she is so sweet and loves to be cuddled and only nips when she wants her vegetables at night! LOL have fun with your new bunny!

The fuzzy lop will need daily brushing to avoid mats in his fur. You also want to brush out the loose fur so he won't get a hairball. You'll need to decide if you have the time to commit to doing that.

If you get the female, be sure to get her spayed. Female bunnies have an 85% chance of getting uterine cancer by the time they're 4-5 years old and it's always fatal. Spaying doesn't do much for a female's temperment. Some are cage-protective because they always have the instinct to protect their litter whether they have one or not. My spayed female is very sweet, loves to be petted and held. But I know not to reach into her cage too quickly because I might get nipped. Neutering greatly helps behavior in males. It eliminates the hormones that make them agressive and act like dorks. My 3 neutered males are all very sweet. When we got the two younger ones neutered last year, I was amazed at the almost immediate change in their behavior.
