I know there have been some changes at Fort Wilderness's barns. Does anyone know if they still have pony rides. I'm taking a grandson for his 5th birthday next month, and I looking for fun things for him outside the parks. Anybody know the status of the ponies?

Thanks for the quick response. I look forward to taking him for the his first non-electric pony ride.:goodvibes

I am not sure exactly how long you get for the ride, but what I thought was a nice touch was that instead of a CM walking along with the pony, the parent gets to walk the pony while the child rides it, My GD loved that her mommy got to walk with her and "her" pony!:lovestruc

From my recollection, it is not terribly long, but the horses are super slow, so it SEEMS like a long time.;)

Its not a real long ride, but fun for the little ones. I did like that we walked them around, (wish I knew this before we got there since I had my younger son with me as well who didn't want to ride, so he had to walk around path with me as well in sandals and wasn't too happy about it. I would have left him with DH) My son and niece (5 and 3) did it and thought it was so much fun. We did do a second loop since my niece thought one loop wasn't enough :). I think it was like $6 for one loop. I would do it again.

And here's a hint if your little one is close to the height limit. Our middle daughter who LOVES horses and we built up the whole pony ride idea, when we got there she was a bit over height. She's a good kid, and not a tantrum thrower. She was okay with being told no until we were about 50 feet away, then she couldn't contain her sadness and began crying quietly. While she and mom were working through how the "rules were the rules" and getting cool with it, a cast member passed by. She asked what the problem was, and said, let's try it again. When our little one had her shoes off, she was under the line and could ride. I still get a little choked up thinking about how that CM made the whole vacation for our little horse rider.

Our princess spent quite a bit of time writing up a thank you note and card which we delivered to the stables supervisor.
