Landed tonight after 4 nights at the Poly. We are DVC members and stayed in Moorea. We saw Alan Jackson Friday night and then hit the parks )my wife made me count up my trips - lets just say it was more than I knew) .
Some quick reviews
We ate all of the breakfasts in the room as we hit Publix for groceries on the way into the resort late on Thursday night. We found we are not big breakfast folks.
Friday was a lazy day before the concert. We made our way over to the new Tower. My wife had the sliders while I had the burger. The burger was average while the sliders my wife liked. My big issue was service was very slow AND it did not take a DVC discount which was just strange. The service and the quality of the food were really not good. It was very meh. Should have mobile ordered from Capt Cooks. We had a couple of drinks here but again Meh.
That night was the first time at Jaleo. We are huge Morimoto fans but wanted something new. We tried the strawberry menu. I likes the soup way more than my wife's as it balances the sweetness and acid. She had the Strawberry Gin and Tonic and it was simply fabulous. We both discussed coming back for these. Finally, We did the pork - I thought it was very good. The menu was overwhelming and I felt like we could back and have an entirely different meal. The croquets which were our first bite were likely our favorite.
I liked it more than my wife but she agreed we might be back.
Saturday was MK. As a hard rule, we never eat in MK but we stumbled into something very good. The food at the Golden Oak Outpost was seriously good. The beignets were more than passable and the Hot Honey chicken slayed. We loved it which was not expected.
We ate some light hors d'oeuvres in the room before our dinner reservation at California Grill. The original plan was to go to the bar at Steakhouse 71 then dinner. We did make it to Steakhouse 71 - and had a brink but no wings. This was a mistake
We had dinner at California Grill. I am 57 and have never eaten there after going for 48 years. I had high expectations. The menu was fixed which is not our favorite. I had the Capelliti and she had the Surf and Turf roll. She won that round. She had the Prok for the entree while I had the Filet. My filet was cooked to my liking with great flavor; the irony was the carrot puree was the best part of my dish. Her pork was very good - taking a bite of the tenderloin with a bite of pork belly together was very good. Maybe the single best bite of the night. The dessert was disappointing. My wife had the White Chocolate Mousse which was almost tasteless; I had the olive oil cake which was just ok. The service was good. The bread was fine and the staff was friendly. But I was expecting just way more.
Maybe it was the really bad seats we had that were the first table as you entered the dining room. But I came away with this impression. I grew up in a resort town in Virginia Beach. We had a few restaurants that had incredible views of the ocean or the Chesapeake Bay. And the food was often rather not good. They had the view so they felt like they could put mediocre food and no one would care. I felt like for the money this meal was not nearly what it could have been.
Sunday was HS - and we again were surprised. Ten-plus years ago we had lunch one day at the ABC Commissary, where I had one of the worse hamburgers ever. It's still top 3 worse burgers - (there was a place my parents took us to in Myrtle Beach which remains the worst - it was completely inedible). Today we had a wonderful meal here. Would easily go back.
It was 86 degrees so it was pool day. I went to the Oasis Pool Bar and tried the drinks. Two of the 4 special drinks had my bartender poor frozen stuff out of a machine and poor a shot on top - one of which I did not watch and my first drink was a pure shot of dark rum. It was just disappointing. Glad I bought some beer at Publix. What is strange is I have some great experiences at several pool bars at WDW - OKW has a great little bar.
The last experience was Narcoosse's . This restaurant has a special place - and it's one that only I take my wife to. And tonight was no different. My wife had the shrimp cocktail and the shrimp were huge and incredible. I had Brisket Tortellini which was good but my wife won that round. She had the surf and turf. It is the only place she will order this dish. Her filet was incredible. I again went steak - my strip steak was very good. Everything was just done right. We both came away very happy. Dessert was always for me the cheesecake and I loved it. She had one as well (she was not eating mine) and she was not a huge fan. Their sourdough was also great. We did get to watch the fireworks from the restaurant which was nice. This restaurant remains at the top of our list; we have now had two full meals plus desserts here and each time has been just so well executed. Take my money please.
We had reservations for Kona for breakfast on the last day we canceled. Still have not had the Tonga Toast.
