We just returned from a 6 night stay at Coronado Springs with the Free Dining Plan. Total cost for 2 Adults and 2 Children (my DD and her cousin) with 7 Day Park Hoppers was $1770. We have APs so we saved the 7 day hopper for later, but used my niece's pass. We usually paid for the kids meals and saved a lot of the TS and CS credits for the adults. We also had the Disney Dining Experience card that saved us 20% on the kids TS meals and our alcoholic drinks. Our meals had a 15% gratuity added to the free dining (we tipped extra) and there was no gratuity added to the DDE card purchases except at the California Grill where our waiter added 18% to our drinks. We also used the free valet parking with the DDE card which saved us about $70 over our whole 11 day stay :).

Total Value of Credits Used: $1121

We ate more TS meals than we normally would have and we ordered an extra appitizer and dessert when we wouldn't normally do so. We did not order a more expensive entree than we would have normally and we tried a couple of new places and returned to a couple of old favorites :).

Table Service Meals:

Total credits used: 23 (we didn't use one)
Total value: $804

Yachtman's Steakhouse
4 TS Credits Used, value = $148.00
Kids, Drinks and extra tip: $39

Very good meal! We had the Lobster Bisque and the Seared Maine Diver Scallops to start and the Chateaubriand for Two for our main meal. I wasn't too impressed by any dessert (I'm not a sweet eater) so I can't remember what we had. We left stuffed to the gills.

California Grille
4 TS Credits Used, value = $149
Drinks, extra tip (kids were at the Neverland Club!): $42

We started with the Bigeye Tuna Three Ways and the Seared Foie Gras. I originally wanted to try the "Snake in the Grass" but after leaving the Yachtman's Steakhouse so full, I went for a lighter choice. The tuna was OK and the Foie Gras was great! My DH had the Veal Tournedos and I had the Halibut Steamed with Banana Leaf. We were there for our anniversary and they included a nice chocolate sign with our dessert. We had some extra magic during our meal. A man next to us shared his bottle of $200 wine with us! *sigh* I can't remember the name of it right now, but it might come back to me. The wine was excellent and so was the rest of our meal. We were seated looking toward Epcot, so we watched Wishes from the balcony. All in all, a very nice dinner.

Alfredo's
2 TS Credits Used, value = $66
Drinks, kids, extra tip: $40

We started with the Fritto Misto con Calamari and the Mozzarella alla Caprese. The squid was tender, but a bit fishy. The mozzarella and tomatoes were very nice. My DH had the Piccatina di Vitello and I had the Le Originali Fettuccine all'Alfredo. Both were very good. The was one of the restaurants I wanted to try on the dining plan and I was pleased. The service was good as was the food. I didn't think that the tables were too close as was reported by others.

Prime Time Cafe
1 TS Credits Used, value = $36
Drinks, kid, extra tip: $7.25

I didn't eat here because I had to bring my DD back to the room. I was bummed since this was the second "new" restaurant on my list on ones to try. My DH and niece's ate alone. My DH had the Caramelized Salmon and he was not impressed with it. That's all I know! My DH should have used the other TS credit for my niece's, but he didn't so we ended up wasting one :(.

Jiko's
4 TS Credits Used, value = $128
Drinks, kids, extra tip: $50

We wanted to eat at Boma's, but there were no ARs to be had :(. We ended up at Jikos which is always good. We started out with the Taste of Africa and the Jiko Goat and Sheep Cheese Selection. My DH had the Pan-Roasted and Maize-crusted Halibut and I had the Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon. Very yummy!

Teppanyaki Steakhouse
4 TS Credits Used, value = $165
Drinks, extra tip (DDE not accepted here): $30

We love Teppanyaki and I am bummed that the DDE card is not accepted here. The kids meals were paid for using TS credits, so I included their meals. The kids were able to order appetizers from the adult menu, but many kids wouldn't be able to find anything to eat. We were seated next to an unadventurous family using the meal plan who didn't order an app for their kids and they had just had salads. We started with the Sushi Sampler, a Spicy Tuna Roll, an order of Edamame and Miso soup. The adults ate the sushi and the kids eat the soy beans and soup. I bought my DD an order of Tamago (egg sushi) since she is a vegetarian and I knew she wouldn't eat the meat in her meal. My DH had the San-Kai (Cold water lobster and NY Sirloin) and I had the Nihon-Kai (Cold water lobster, scallops and shrimp) both kids had the Shichi-Go-San (Chicken or shrimp with grilled fresh vegetables, steamed rice and child dessert). We all had ice cream for dessert. Everything was great!

Crystal Palace
4 TS Credits Used, value = $75
No extra drinks or tip on buffet meal.

The salmon was excellent and I loved the spoon bread. Good character interaction despite the busy atmosphere. I like this place for lunch better than breakfast, but I think the kids would have eaten more breakfast foods. They picked at their meals and I was glad I wasn't shelling out any money for the meal.

Counter Service Meals:

Total credits used: 24
Total value: $267

We ate at Flame Tree BBQ, Pizzafari, Peco's Bills, the Tusker House and the Pepper Market. We used credits for the kids about half the time, especially at the park CS meals like Pizzafari. My DD wanted a pizza (no longer offered on the kids menu and my niece wanted a sandwich). The best "bang for our buck" was the Pepper Market at CSR. We ordered the grilled tuna more than once (very yummy!) and the steak. I also had the pizza there once and we ate breakfast there twice. The extra counter service meals for the kids came out to be about $65 including the price of a refillable mug.

Snacks:
Total credits used: 22
Total value: $50

Ice cream, chips and drinks. We didn't use them as much as we should have. I wanted to buy ice cream on our last night, but I couldn't find an open ice cream cart at the last minute at the MK. We picked up a bag of chips and 4 waters for our trip home on our way out of the MK on our final day. I bought a couple Dole Whip floats and a box of caramel corn for a total of about $10 :).

That's it! If you have any questions ... feel free to ask!

Do you just show the DDE when you give them your car keys?

Thanks for the reviews. You saved quite a lot of $$$$. Too bad you didn't get to try Prime time café.....

I would give them the DDE card when I picked up my car :).

We stayed on the second floor of 9B overlooking the pond to the road. It was a very nice location, just a hop, skip and jump to El Centro, the Dig Site and Bus Stop #1. Parking was also very easy and the convention crowd (Steelworkers) were very nice. My DH likes POFQ, but I think I like CSR better.

thank you so much for your review - we are going to CSR at the end of Sept on the free dining and your review was very helpful. I was also thinking how great the Pepper Market is going to be for counter service meals. Did they restrict you on anything there, like a desert or side? I had heard that was a problem when it first started but haven't heard anything since.

Thanks

This might be a silly question, but why did you pay out of pocket for the kids meals instead of using your credits? I'm still trying to figure this dining thing out (we are paying for the dining pkg. for our Dec. trip to CSR).

Suzanne74: Yes, there was a limit on what we could order from the Pepper Market. We could only order a muffin or cookie for dessert and there was no dessert with breakfast, even though muffins and cookies were available. We would take the muffins back to our room for breakfast the next morning. As for the side, I always just took the side that was offered and forgot all about it with my pizza.

Buzzfan: I paid for the kids to make my credits stretch a bit, especially the Table Service credits. California Grille, Jikos and Yachtman's Steakhouse are all double-credit restaurants. Using 4 TS credits for two $7 kids meal when I could pay for the meals and save the credits and use the same 4 credits for a $75 meal for 4 at the Crystal Palace makes more sense. We could go to nicer places and/or more places by paying for the kids sometimes and using the credits somewhere else.

You might find the Dining Plan FAQ helpful: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=820709.

wow, glad to read your review. I didn't know you get free valet parking with DDE card. I had the DDE card in May and still paid valet parking at GF for meal at 1900 Park Faire.

Next time in December, I will remember to flash my DDE card at the valet booth. Now, is the free valet parking limited to dining purposes only? Or can you park valet all day at GF and take the monorail to MK?

Enjoyed reading your reviews ~ Thanx for posting.

Excellent review Robinb! I had hoped someone would post a review of Dining Plan + DDE because we're doing the same exact thing as you, with exception of the tickets.

We're also going to be paying OOP for some of the kids meals so we can save the credits for bigger things. Did the CMs give you trouble for splitting up the bill or were they pretty efficient about it? Did you just tell them up front that you were splitting the bill?

Thanks for all the great information.

tclowe: I didn't have to show a receipt with my DDE card and I did valet park at the GF when we were running late for my DD's Pirate Cruise.

oogieboogie: Splitting the meals was very easy. When the server came to take our order I would say point to my DH and say "We are on the Dining Plan and we want to pay for the kids' meals." Most servers were prefectl OK with that, although one tried to help me out by explaining that I had credits for the kids. I just said, "Thanks, I know. I'd like to pay for them anyway." Knowing exactly when to give the server the Disney Dining Experience card was more problematic. I was never sure when was the best time. I would sometimes tell them at the beginning of the meal and they seemed surprised. I started telling the server when they would do their final post-dessert check and that seemed to work better. I really didn't want to wait until they left the bill and have them re-do the whole thing. Using the DDE card was really nice because the amount of the discount was the amount of our tip for those items.

I just remembered the wine the man at the California Grille shared with us. It was a Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Insignia. Very yummy!

Thanks for sharing the great reviews. We leave in 3 weeks and I found your post very helpful since we will be dining in many of the same places. I'm glad you had a great time!

(P.S.--we're from Wisconsin too. Used to live just outside of Madison in Sun Prairie, until we moved to the sticks! Go Packers!!!)
