Questions for early Alaskan cruisers!

Correct....some TA's and websites are banned on the Dis. If you type a full url and it comes up with **************** that means the filter picked it up as a banned website. If you try to get around the filter it can result in an infraction.

Some people don't know which websites are banned ones on the Dis so when in doubt just type the full URL and as long is does not come up with ******* it is an OK website to post.

And I know someone will ask why some TA's are banned...this is the response from the admins:

The DIS is a privately owned web site and we reserve the right to restrict any outside commercial ventures at our discretion. We will not discuss the reasons behind why specific websites are filtered and any discussion regarding the word filter may be deleted. If you have questions or comments about this or any other DISboards policy, you can address with the webmasters at admin@wdwinfo.com.

Yah I got a warning -I had no idea -I thought maybe it was because 2 words came together and made a 'bad' word - like if you put as she ran but it was www.as*heran.com kind of thing - I got my hand slapped for suggesting www dot as she ran dot com LOL. I thought it was something to do with something coming up as swearing. Im so clueless. lol

I think the pools will be open in the calmer water, but with 20ft swells, they can't open them!

I don't really know anything about what DCL plans to do as far as sailing on the inside or outside of the island going North or South.

One thing to remember is that sunrise that far north in the summer time will be very early. Even now the sun is rising at about 4:40 in Vancouver with nautical twilight (first light) happening around 3:15ish. With a scheduled arrival at 8:00 I think that DOES Mean daylight for that portion (or much of it anyway) on the Southbound portion of the cruise. Remember that the earlier portions of the cruise through that area will be further north where the sun is coming up even earlier as well.

The board filter will also pick up "swear" words so you are part right!!!

My question for the returning cruisers is what is the timeline for Tracy Arm day. How long did it take to get to the end where the glacier is and how long did you spend there before heading back?

Well, I live along this route, so "official" info aside, I know for certain that, with the ship sailing at about 5:00 pm, there is much more daylight going out than coming back. I have not seen the sun rise that early this year yet (and yes, I wake up early).

We were in Vancouver last week and the sun rose in our window every morning around 6am. Glorious site!
Started to set around 8:30ish at night.

Okay. I just looked up the times on a couple of weather sites--if they are wrong so be it.
I had no idea when the ship left Vancouver. I do know my best friend's blog says it WAS dark as they were sailing up. Odd. Maybe Disney is using Magical pixie dust to control the light:lmao:

I guess it is about the same latitude as here really (I am in Heidelberg Germany) and we have been light out around 5:00ish with sunrise a bit closer to 6:00 this week.

There are actually any number of reasons they would change the course for one or more sailings. One being that the area is known for having pretty severe tides that might affect the ability to navigate the area. Some of the passages are very tight and I could certainly understand the ship not being allowed through if the captain isn't familiar with the area. Weather conditions including fog, which is common this time of year, also might play into the need to alter the course.

Also, when cruise ships go up the East side of Vancouver Island, they are required to have a pilot aboard for the entire trip until they hit Alaskan waters. By taking the course up the West side of the island, they don't need the pilot most of the trip.

I definately understand that there are factors that may cause them to alter the route on some sailings; and if that were to happen (even on my sailing) while I might be disappointed, I would certainly understand.
My concern/complaint was that it was being said that Disney was not allowed to go the east side due to it being their first year. Now if DCL knew/knows that they will be unable to sail that side of the island their entire first year- their website should reflect that. Currently their website has them going in between the island, not around it.
With that said; I just read an update on one of the blogs posted here on the first page that Disney went around the island because it was their first sailing, the blogger did not mention anything about the first year, only about the first sailing. So maybe (hopefully) this was only the case for the first sailing and this coming weeks sailing will go in between the island and Vancouver like originally expected. Time will tell.....
I know we will have a wonderful time in a few weeks regardless, but I certainly hope we go the route I have been anticipating....

So will the pools be open or not? I'm confused! :goodvibes

I saw some photos from the Tracy Arm day that showed a handfull of people in the main pool and hot tub. So I would imagine as long as they are sailing calm waters, the pools will be open.

Amswers tonmany of our questions are in today's blog posts!! The photos are incredible!!! Go read them!

OK, it's official. I am TOTALLY excited now for our August cruise! The description of the day at Tracy Arm was amazing, from the BBQ on deck to Minnie's cool winter outfit to the gorgeous scenery. I have a feeling that the DCL officers are definitely earning their pay and are probably excited themselves to get to do a route so completely different from anything they've done before. Looks to me like sailing up that passage takes a bit more attention than what they normally do when they are out-and-about from ocean/sea port to another port. (Not that they are slackers at all under those circumstances.....just probably fun to do something more challenging than the "norm"!)

I know....I am excited as well!!!
I don't really know the difference of all the sailings and where to go and what it better since I have not been to Alaska yet! I am just excited to be on another Disney Cruise and going to Alaska!!!!!!!

See you all in August
Cyndi
