Questions about tonsils being removed??

Augmentin did nothing for my daughter besides "delay" what needed to be done to make her better. We went through the crap OVER AND OVE again...we'll put her on XXXXX to see if it helps...it helped for like two weeks, then we were back to square one.

The real question should not be 'does it work'...sure for most people it does (temporarily). The question should be 'how many times do I want to get a different scrip for something to MASK the underlaying problem BEFORE we take care of the actual problem'...taking care of the real problem will save lots of trips to the dr and lots of new scrips to try.

I was thinking the same thing about the medicine just "delaying" what needs to be done. So now I don't know what I should do...because the end of the month is her spring break and it is the perfect time to get them taken out...so watch them go down and then I cancel the surgey and then have to have her miss a week of school/swimming/gymnastics:confused3

OMG, I really need to read more carefully!

I was shocked to read that someone wanted to have their daughter's toenails removed because they were so big that they were affecting her sleeping and eating! :scared1:

:lmao::lmao::rotfl2:

Aweee good luck.

My now 4yo had them out right after his 2nd birthday. He had gotten ac old, they swelled up and never went down. Her also ended up with fluid in his ears which caused some hearing loss. There was no history of ear infections. All together he has tonsils out, adenoids out and ear tubes in. He did great with the surgery. Because his age he did spend the night in the hospital. He was back to himself in 2 days.

I just got back from a tonsillectomy! Dd is 3 and had a different reason for the surgery; she has just one scary large tonsil, but no illness. The tonsil was enlarged past her uvula, over half of her throat. There doesn't seem to be any reason for it, though, and we hope it turns out to be just 'one of those things'. They took her back at 7:30am and we were home by 10 am! She is fine, is eating pudding right now.

I was told the tonsils will not shrink, they will only get larger. So we opted to remove them. In many cased I think removal is the right answer.

My DD was getting strep often but not too bad. Her tonsils were very large though and we were sent to an ENT upstairs from her Ped. twice because they were very concerned.

We waited a few months but then had them taken out last summer right after she turned 6 years old.

Her ENT was all for taking them out. She is really small for her age and was a picky eater, she also didn't speak clearly all of the time. He said all of those small things may be helped if we took them out, so we did.

Her height has not improved but we are going back to the specialist for that but she has gained weight and eats so much better now. All the adults in her life have noticed. She also speaks clearer and we haven't had strep or a cold since they were removed.

Nothing but a positive experience for us and the surgery and recovery was a snap for her.

Oh and she used to get dry chapped lips and that is gone now too. He said that was caused from mouth breathing at night.

She had her adnoids removed too but the ENT said when he took them out they looked okay but the tonsils looked icky.

We had tried 3 different antibiotics between September and February. The ENT we went to suggested we try something else for a full 2 weeks. I asked if she thought that it would really work better than options 1, 2 and 3 had and she asked when we wanted to schedule the surgery.

I think they like to give you options, but I think I would ask the doctor if they are just delaying what you will end up needed to do anyway.

My younger dd had hers out when she was about 4. She had sleep apnea and snored so loudly we could hear her down the hall with our door closed. Once they were out, no more snoring or sleep apnea.

Older dd had hers out last June just before her 16th birthday. They were out on a Friday (she had to spend about 5 hours total at the hospital) and by the following Weds was fine. Hers kept getting bigger and bigger and the dr would say, when you want them out let me know.

I had mine out when I was 30. My sister had hers out the same day and she was 22. Hers were so gross that white specks of infection would lodge in the craters on her tonsils and then she would spit them out. It was really gross!

So my vote is taking them out the earlier the better.
