Questions about staying on site

We are planning a short non park trip next summer. We will actually be staying near Tampa but want to spend a little time on Disney property. We plan to book Polynesian. My question is are we able to drive over and visit other resorts? Or do we need to take Disney transportation? Would love to visit Animal Kingdom Lodge and Port Orleans while we are there.
