Questions about making resv. using codes????

I have a few questions about making reservations and using the great discount codes. On our last trip (Oct. '00) I booked everything through AAA. Now I am planning a trip for Mar or Apr of 2003. We would like to stay on-site and I don't really care where because since I've only stayed at one Disney resort I am eager to try anything new.

I have noticed that the codes available for discounts don't seem to be offered that far in advance. Should I book my room now and then wait to see if a code comes up? Is it best to just do this through CRO myself? Is it easy to call up and change resorts if a code comes up later with a better rate at a different resort?

Thanks for all the help. I was just wondering how everyone was getting the great deals without waiting until the last minute to book their trips.

I would reserve a room now, just to be assured that you have a room for the dates that you want to go. Reserve the nicest resort that fits into your budget, assuming no discounts. If discounts later become available, you can call and change your reservation. I wouldn't wait until discounts come out to book, just because of the risk of not being able to get a room at the resort you choose.

I agree with Shannon! I orginally booked my August Poly trip with the AAA discount. Then, after discussing it here on the resort board, several DISers recommended that I invest in at least 1 AP so I could book using the AP rate. I called CRO up and changed to that. Now I'm biding my time waiting for the August discount codes to come out. When and if one comes by for the time frame I'm going, I will be on the phone to CRO again!

Yup, book now with AAA discount (exactly the same as DC's) and keep your eyes opened for codes. At least you'll have the room, especially if you look into any resort that fills up fast.

Thanks everyone for clearing that up. Now we just have to decide where we want to stay, decisions, decisions!!!

Tuffcookie:

I believe there are Mickey Monitor (AP newsletter) discounts out for August. Try calling CRO and asking for this discount for your reservation dates.

infseeker, I got so excited when I read your post! But then I called CRO and asked the CM to check for a Mickey Monitor discount for the time I was going and she checked my res. # and said I already had it. I have the AP rate. Is this Mickey Monitor code something else?

Sorry Tuffcookie, I thought I was helping out. I assumed it was the same as the AP rate. It's about 30% off of rack rates. I guess, like you, I'll keep looking to see if there is an AP rate that might come out closer to August that is more than 30% off!

4forDis,
Excellent question! I'm always watching these boards just for the
question you just asked. We're planning for April 2003 to WDW
and I'd like to save some $$$. So any information is greatly
appreciated.:D

Hi,

I'm going to offer a little bit of a different opinion.....

I used to plan my Disney trips a year in advance, too. But, over the last few years, I've found the best trips (best = least expensive) were the ones I planned spur of the moment (spur of the moment = about 2 months lead time).

I periodically check the U.S. Airways home page. Their cheapest tickets are usually ones that need to be used within a couple of months. If I see a cheap ticket, my next stop is mousesavers for a code offered for the same time period. If I get a match.... I go!

The savings I've realized on individual trips by traveling this way, have been truly significant .... And, have been just about offset by the expense of the increased number of trips I now go on. :)

But, I've found I prefer getting my Disney fix over a 4-5 day stay - that I can now take 1-2x a year - rather, than a much longer stay, every 2-3 years. And, with shorter trips, it's easier to take kids out of school to take advantage of less crowded times. DisneyW during an uncrowded time is heaven on earth ... and, during crowded times - it's <ahem>, the opposite!!

Just another opinion! Enjoy your trip!:)
