Questions about adding on points

We just got word yesterday we passed ROFR on 50 BWV points....and I'm already thinking about adding more points! I have some questions about the rules of adding on directly through Disney.

1. Can we add on a different resort with a different use year?

2. I know sometimes new members get prior years points when they buy in. Can an existing member get prior years points for an add on or is that only for new members initial buy in? (I realize sometimes it depends on use year if they're offering it or not).

3. Do the Doorways to Dreams locations have the same pricing/incentives as going through Disney directly?

thanks for the information!!

1. You can add-on at any resort for as little as 25 points. If you want a new UY, you need to buy a new master contract of 160 points.
2. Yes, as long as the have the points available and it is before your UY.
3. Some times yes and some times no. You will have to check each out to see which one has the best deal.

Just to clarify, you get points for the current Use Year when you add on directly through Disney, provided they still have them available. If someone added on through Disney today (May 12, 2010) and had a Feb, Mar or Apr Use Year, their first set of points would be the 2010 UY points because that is their current UY. If they had a Jun, Aug, Sep, Oct or Dec UY, their first set of points would be 2009 UY points because for those Use Years, they are still in their 2009 UY. If you are purchasing close to the end of your UY (say if you had a June UY and were adding on today) Disney might be out of current UY points, depending on which resort you were trying to purchase.

In order to get a new use year you have to buy a new master contract of 160 pts. Is there any word on new members being able to buy in at 50 points? If that's possible, would an existing member be able to buy a 50 point "new master contract" for a different use year??

If a non-member can purchase a new membership contract at 50 points, I would think an existing member shoudl be able to do so, as it techincally IS a competely new membership since it is a different use year. If nothing else, maybe you could title it slightly differently.

I currently have and Oct UY with 100 OKW points. If I wanted to add on (and that was always the plan) and additional 100 points but in 2- 50 point increments so that we can pay it off quickly would I be able to sell if necessary any of the points (100, 50, 50) if we found a need to do so. I understand that they stay separate from each other but would be usable together as they would be for the same resort with the same UY. Am I correct?

Yes, you are correct. :thumbsup2

Thanks, some of this stuff gets so confusing to us Newbies. Only been a member since March 30 (the day I signed my papers) so its great to get clarification from the more experienced DVC members.

Another question: has Disney always allowed for small add ons or is this something new that might not last? We will have enough points for the next 3 years but after that we may need to go at a more point heavy time or we may decide to upgrade to the 1 bedroom. Should I consider adding on now or in your experienced opinion can I wait a year or so? TIA

Wait and buy resale. There will be a flood of 50 point contracts available. :woohoo:

Resale doesn't seem to have the extended contracts. Or are you refering to the ability to buy in Direct from Disney with as few as 50 points? From what I see on the resale market the price point is only about $10 - $12 per point less than Disney. For that difference I would pefer to go Direct with Disney myself with the possible previous years points, UY the same and I'm not one who can wait for weeks only to find out I've be ROFRed.

I would think the Doorway to Dreams is the same. I would imagine having different use years and resorts would be difficult to track, given I have trouble with my one contract

We don't have Doorway to Dreams here in Ontario. Have to either go resale or Direct with Disney Rep. Was curious though if Disney has always offered small add ons to current members or if this is something new they are doing and it could disappear before I'm ready to add on. looking for guidance from all of you who have lived with Addonitus for years.

....(snip)........

1. Can we add on a different resort with a different use year?

.....

For those who do not know, if you get a different use year, you will have a different member number for the "add-on" contract. Essentially, you will have two completely different contracts. That means you will not be able to combine points to book a single night. You would have to transfer points between the contracts to do that, and that would use the one transfer per use year for both contracts.

This can certainly be managed - many members do it. But it is an inconvenience and takes extra effort to avoid losing a few points here and there. Just be sure the benefits of having two use years are worth it.
