Questions about adding day to ticket

I will be in Disneyland next week (YAY!). We bought 3 day Park Hopper tickets right before the current promotion started. My daughter and I will be going down a day early and want to tack on a 4th day to our tickets.

Do we add the day at the outside ticket booth or inside City Hall? At either one, is there a "quieter" time to try and get that done? Our options will be Friday, January 11 or Saturday January 12. Our extra day is Thursday, but we won't be entering the park until 2 PM or so, so I don't want to take precious park time to deal with that.

Second question. My understanding is that you have to pay the difference between what you paid for the tickets and the current ticket price. Is it possible that they will give us the promotion price for the upgraded tickets, and therefore a free day? We paid $330 for our 3 day PH tickets. The current Disney promotion tickets are $279 for a 4 day PH. Does that make sense?

You could do it on the way out at the end of the night. That way, you're not wasting any in-park time.

I've tried contacting guest services about upgrading my regular 2 day/1park per day tickets w/maxpass to promotional 3day/1park per day w/maxpass. I've received 3 different answers, yes, no, and maybe. They just don't know how to handle the upgrades with the promo tickets, they just refer me to the ticket booths. As far as the best time to try, evenings are slower at the booths. I would love to hear how it goes, will you please report back?

I thought about contacting Guest Services but thought someone on here might have an answer. After seeing your experience, I won't bother contacting them in advance and will just go and hope for the best. I'm prepared to pay $25 per ticket which is the difference between what I bought and a 4 day full price PH ticket which is what I now want, it would just be nice not to have to pay it if I don't have to.

My trip is Jan 10-13. I'll report back here with how it went when I return.

When do your current DLR tickets expire? If you think you'll be going down again before they expire, maybe just buy a new set of 4-day park hoppers?

I understand it's an option, but as of right now we don't have any plans to go back down in 2019.

I upgraded our 3 day hopper to a 5 day, in city hall prior to rope drop. We paid the difference between the costs, handed in the 3 days tickets and receive a new one for the 5 day. It was really easy.
