Question regarding monthly payments for Annual Passes

We are residents of California, and plan on purchasing Annual Passes prior to our next DLR trip at Halloween. I have a question regarding the monthly payment plan. Do they just send you a bill, so you can can make your payment by a method of your choosing? Or do they just automatically make a monthly charge to whichever card you used to pay initial installment? I've searched a bit and have not found an answer to this. Just thought I'd ask here before calling.

That's what I figured it would be. Yet, I've read there are penalties for late payment. How can you be late if they are automatically taking payment? That is what made me think that maybe they just bill you.
