Hi fellow Dis'ers.

I am not sure where to put this, but have seen this topic before and can't remember the name.

I remember reading about a rash that develops on the lower legs after walking around on the cement at the parks all day.
Can anyone help me out with the name of it? And what happens, how to treat it...etc?

Thanks :)

I seem to remember reading that it's basically a burn from the heat radiating back up from the asphalt onto your bare legs.

Last year was the first in many that I didn't get it!!! Instead, I picked up hand, foot, mouth disease. On the soles of my feet!!! That was a few fun days. The girls (dd13 and her friend) had a great time laughing at how I was walking. Trust me, I'd take the vasulitis again!!

Golfer's Vasculitis.

Here is an earlier thread on the subject: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1369601&referrerid=93883

:)

good info on that thread -

I get mine at DHS - and my legs swell, they dont really hurt, or itch - I went to the first aid station - and they said it is common and it was probably caused by the blacktop treatment on the walkways at DHS!

I just get a few extra pillows, put my feet up and cold down some towels,(to wrap the feet/claves) get an adult beverage watch tv while DH and DD go down to the pool!

yep... I just got back from 7 days and I had it on both ankles/lower calves.
I think mine showed up on a DHS day too!

I've never gotten it at WDW, but I used to get it when DH and I would walk in New York City. I have sensitive skin, so I assume it is the dirt, grime, and everything else steaming up from the pavement. It starts around my ankles, and on a bad day can get up my calves. I find that the absolute best thing to do for it is to take a shower as soon as you get back to where you are staying. More often than not, if I showered that night and really soaped it down, the rash would be completely gone by the next morning. Lotion and Benedryl can help if it is more persistent. I don't think it is golfer's vasculitus either, because I have never once gotten it from the grass, or any time when I was not on pavement/sidewalk of some sort. (Actually, I don't recall getting it anywhere outside of NYC, but I get it almost every time I walk outside much there). I don't think it has anything to do with blood vessels.

I got this rash on our visit in 07. Mine showed up after our day at IOA. I put it down to the water on the Popeye ride :confused3 Maybe it is the pavement! Or a bit of both!

Claire :)

How wierd. I got a rash this year for the first time. It was after a full day at DHS waiting in line for character M&G's for SWW. It showed up at the end of the day right after we watched the fireworks from illuminations from the Boardwalk. I attributed it to a reaction from the firework smoke but am now wondering if it was this. It was mostly gone by the end of the day the next day after taking a day off from the parks.

Thanks everyone.

I have been to Disney 3 times on week vacations and haven't had it happen. Only to go to my local theme park (Cedar Point), which I go every year for 30+ years, and came home with this rash!

Thank goodness I remembered reading threads of this or I would've been freaked out. It is the strangest thing. All these tiny red spots and then the occasional "itch", the swelling...my that is the worst.

It has me concerned about the upcoming WDW trip. I do not want to experience this at the world!! UGH. :scared1:

I should have also noted that if I didn't shower until the next morning for some reason, the rash either would be the same, or worse.

I get it occsionally and pretty mildly, but my aunt got Disney Rash something fierce this trip. We had gone to DHS for SWW (very hot - long day walking) on Sun and Mon went over for 2 nights at Vero. She had been out early to look for shells and had been out for a little while Mon night at the beach. Tues morning at the beach she started to break out and it went on until about 2 days ago - 2 weeks of it. I've never seen it so bad before on anyone - it looked terrifying and was unbelievably painful for her.

She had to wear long pants, socks and take a few days off just to get some relief. It was really weird because its the first time she's ever had any issues with it and she's been here dozens of times.

At one point we went into First Aid at MK as she was so uncomfortable. The nurses there said it was just Disney Rash and gave her some benadryl cream for it. They said its more common in women for some reason or at least they see it more in women in terms of reporting.

I doubt that she had the same vasculitis that many of us get. Ours doesn't hurt or itch, but it sure is unsightly. I'll bet she came into contact with something on the beach.
But, there are many different types of 'rash' out there. I get the true vasculitis...over 40, female, a bit flabby (or can just be fat) and fair skinned/haired. It is a circulatory issue....the 'rash' is pretty much under the skin, so no itching or pain other than the swellling issue that can go hand in hand with it.
I used to get it much worse. My doctore couldn't figure it out..she said it was hives, eczema, psoriasis..none of those things fit. I even took a photo of my legs. Finally, I found the golfers vasculitis online...I printed it out and handed it to her...after over 2 years of this. She read it, and grabbed my file...started reading. She looked at me and said...'Oh my God.....your blood pressure med is causing this to be worse than it would normally be. It's a common side effect of your particular med.' Really??? Seriously??? You never thought of that before I gave you that info???
So, check your meds as well. I was on Norvasc at the time. Take Diovan now with little issue. Yes, it still happens but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be.

I wonder if this is what my DFH got in Oct. He was trying to say we had bed bugs at AKV. Not impossible but I had no marks on me at all. I'll hvae to remember this for our next trip.

I'll also note that mine can (not always) be slightly itchy- not horrible, but noticable in the bad spots. I have gotten it since I was in my 20s-at which point I was a skinny size 4. I am very fair skinned. I had also forgotten until DH reminded me that DD (5) (who is not nearly as fair skinned as me- but who does have very sensitive skin) actually did get it last time we were at WDW- I can't remember if it was on DHS day.

I've gotten this on the last few trips we've been on to Disney. The last trip I had only been in MK a couple of hours and I could see it starting up. Not painful or itchy but doesn't look pretty at all.

I got this last June, it appeared aft like day 2 and looked AWFUL, on both legs, a tad itchy every now and then,, it took about a week after getting home for it to fully clear.
last week I got just a touch of it again but we weren't there as many days,, it cleared up within 2 days home.

Could have been biting flies. I got many, many bites last week at OKW. You don't feel them bite until they are gone. Then you itch and get big red welts and scabs when you scratch them. I had about forty of them on my legs and a few more on my arms. My husband didn't get one.

My husband had this last August. It's a combination of walking on the pavement too long and the heat. Essentially what happens, your capillaries swell and burst causing fluids to leak into the interstitial spaces...causing the skin to swell even more and look like a rash. Usually starts at the ankles because that's the first place you swell and then moves up on the leg.

We ended up in the urgent care down the street from WDW. They prescribed a some meds, including an antibiotic because it didnt' take long for the "rash" to look like cellulitis. :scared1: It wasn't "itchy" because it wasn't a rash. The correct way to describe it is petechiae. Looks like a fine point rash under the skin that doesn't itch. It took about a week for the symptoms to completely disappear after elevating the feet and drinking lots of water (and of course taking the meds).

Hope that helps.

OMG I cant tell you how happy I am to read this...DH got this last Oct while at Epcot and we thought it was from salmon...he ate it in Canada...now to know its from the heat, we are THRILLED!!!
