Question on room availability

I am waiting on a room to come available in the Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks of just about anywhere - but not yet available.

I checked and they are available in the villas for cash - will these free up for points if they are not reserved for money? It is frustrating to see that what I paid money for is not available to me unless I want to pay more money to rent them.

Any suggestions?

No, two different inventories. As members trade out for Disney trips, the points they use are translated into lodging which is given to DRC to sell to recover the cost of the non-DVC trip. Plus DVC owns a percentage of the resort which they use to cover maintenance and villas taken out of service. If no maintenance, they sell these through DRC. These villas were never available to you for points, only cash. It would be double booking on points if they offered those villas for points and they can't do that.

So what you see offered on DRC will never become points inventory unless it was points inventory to begin with and was given to DRC at 60 days out to sell. Nothing has been given to DRC for Thanksgiving or Christmas because they are more than 60 days out.

If you want to go at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc, you need to book those trips 11 months out at your home resort.

we did, just want to stay elsewhere - home resort is not our favorite

litlle by little rooms are coming in, just hard to see so many available where we want to stay and just can't book them, seems like they should free them up not leave them empty

They'll upgrade cash guests into DVC resorts before they offer them for points. They don't make any money on a points reservation.

Plus I forgot about the resorts like SSR, AKV and BLT where they aren't sold out yet, so those villas that haven't been sold are up for cash as well.

Makes me question our latest purchase, should have saved it and gotten what I really wanted - they can keep any room at OKW - made that mistake once and NEVER again - like goes on.

Thanks for all your comments

Now I am a big OKW fan. What didn't you like about OKW? I love the large villas, large porches, quiet surroundings, parking close to the villa, breakfast at Olivia's, full sized washer and dryers instead of stackables. If all I could get was OKW, I'd be very happy.

The room was in poor shape - literally had tape holding on the toilet seat, the faucets all leaked the ac had issues, had to be serviced and then moved as they could not repair. First room had a small balcony with trees on top of us so we did not use it - a tree trunk was not much to view. The new room was worse - we overlooked the ac and power supplies for the 3 buildings. We talked to our dvc contact and told her of the concerns - they looked into the rooms and have offered to make amends for the poor experience we had.

The restaurant was really poor in quality and in service - very disappointed and we are really not that picky. We usually love anything Disney. For us OKW needs work.

Wow, I've never had problems like that at OKW. You must have just been lucky or something. Sounds like you were in a studio which are located at the ends of the building so you do get the AC units outside your balcony. You need to try a one bedroom at least.

We had both and I really don't think studios get the bad views in other resorts - we took what they had left just to move. Unfortunately, that one bad apple spoiled the whole bunch for us. Enjoy your stay, we just want to mix it up on our next stay - we know there are better places for us to stay, just waiting patiently for the rooms to open. It usually does, and we will be happy either way. Being in Disney is enough, seeing our son makes it even better.

Good luck with your waitlists.

As you are currently experiencing, Thanksgiving and Christmas are very tough times to get a reservation at 7 months. It's easier to switch resorts at other times of the year. Hope it works out for you.
