My son has some pins in his feet from surgeries last year and I'm wondering what will happen when he goes through the airport scanners. Are we supposed to bring something to prove that he has pins just in case the scanners are set off?

I have major hardware in my ankle and it never sets the scanner off. And I always thought that if it did, the big, ugly scar would be proof enough! I think your son will be all set.

plates nuts and bolts and he has not set it off yet either........you can call the 1800 number for your airline and ask if it will make you at ease when you go......they answered alot of questions about my mils insulin needles and everything else she had to have.....

My MIL has a hip replacement. We asked the doctor if it would set off the metal detector and he said no. It might be the kind of metal that they use.

Different airports re-act differently we've found.

I have an 11" rod in my back, connected to my spine with wing nuts. I've never set off a metal detector yet since 1978.

My 73 yr old mom, however, had a triple bybass. She has some wires in breast bone. She set off the one at Providence (only 1 yr - not the next year.) Couldn't believe the questionning she had to go thru. She's this little old 5 ft lady & easily confused. She was so frazzled.

Both of us never had any problems in Orlando. We always assume I'll be the one stopped since I have WAY more metal than her.

I have carried a dr's note since 1978. However, we have BEAUTIFUL scars if they want to see.

ETA: My boss has some pins in ribs...and she's set off some traveling internationally.

My BIL has a pacemaker and that sets off he alarm. He has a scar but carries a doctor's note. My friends underwire bra set the alarm off. Someone else I know used hand lotion before packing her bag and got pulled out on the explosive screen on the bag?? Weird huh.

My grandmother obtained a note from her doctor stating that she had knee replacements so the equipment may set off the alarm. I would say it would never hurt just to have a doctor's note with you...even for your own sanity.

Have a great trip! :)

Our local airport had a sign stating that it is very helpful to have a Dr's note if you've had any replacements/pacemakers/etc.. I suppose it just helps move the line along if you have a Dr. note ... you won't get held up.

I'd have a Dr's note just to be on the safe side ... but that's just me.

I have screws holding a heal together and have never set off a detector with that. Now forgotten keys or change in the pocket, that has set them off.

I just had THR and my Dr. said I will be getting a little card to carry in my wallet that says I am a THR receipient. It's like a little license that has my name, implant info on it -and also a pic of my x-rays from before and after the surgery - too cool huh?
