Question for veteran FW campers.

I know this is a gross topic. However, we have never used the septic hook up at a campground before, dh asked me last night if you need some kind of attachment for your hose or how it works. I told him I did not know but I knew where I could find out. So if any of you Fort Wilderness Veterans could let me know i would appreciate it. Thanks!

I'm certainly no expert, but when we rented our RV and set up at FtW the hose just went into the septic hole. I didn't have to hook it up to anything.

We didn't need an adapter, it just fits in the hole. But word of warning. Keep the black tank (toilet) closed. Don't let it drain continuously. You will develop a pyramid of stuff if you keep it draining.

Good point. Also, empty your water tank after you empty your sewage tank (to flush everything out of your sewer line).

You need to have a donut or the red adapter previously shown. Go to any RV supplier and they can help you. They even have clear ones so you can see when you're cleaned out (yuck! who'd want to see that!!!).

Alot of campgrounds require donuts for sanitary reasons. One thing we have learned is that when you flush use ALOT of water, or your tissue piles up right under the toilet; I have always done the opposite and been conservative with the water thinking that was bad--but I've learned now--it's better to keep emptying a tank that backing up the toilet! You also need to have a few gallons of water in the black tank to help wash the paper/waste away from under the toilet drain pipe down into the tank. Keep the black tank closed until you have some waste built up so the drainage force will help remove all particles from the tank. The last night of your trip, close up the galley and grey water tanks then use those to wash out the hose after draining the black tank when you pack up to leave. We now pull a water hose inside and put water down the toilet to help wash the black tank out. Be careful not to get your hose dirty in the toilet!

Thanks for all the advice. DH usually makes us go to the bath house for the yucky stuff (I know more info than you needed), cause he dosen't like to dump it. However, I hoped this time he might let us get away with it but if he reads this probably not.

We follow your DH's rule and use the campground facilities except for liquid waste at night. We spend the extra couple of cents and buy the RV toilet paper that dissolves in the tank. We have used the RV toilet for everything but then you have to deal with flushing out the tanks to get rid of solids. Chemicals work pretty well at keeping odors down and helping liquify stuff but its just more work. As long as the bathroom is clean, we use it for the yucky stuff.

That's our philosophy, too. Liquids only down the RV toilet. By the way, if you have electronic monitors for tank levels, don't rely on them. A stray piece of toilet paper over a sensor can give false readings.

we usually use the bath house for the yucky stuff too. But at WDW, my youngest refused to use the automatic toilets. So it was use the camper. Now I use post it notes to cover the sensor in the bathrooms. He puts one up when he goes in, and removes it when done. Then puts it in the trash, and the toilet flushes just fine.

Some sound advice has been given here so I'll stick my nose in also.....

Disposable gloves are a must when working with the hose and valves

Clorox is very good to have around

*A large pair of pliers to loosen the campground drain pipe cap if it is screwed on tightly*

Donut or elbow for connecting hose to drain pipe, this is required by code at many campgrounds

Make sure everything is TIGHT

Chemicals do help with odor

Use lots of water when flushing

*There is NO NEED to use RV Toilet Paper. It is a waste of $$$. SCOTT Toilet paper is FINE to use. It breaks up very nicely.

*When draining BLACK TANK make sure the tank is a least 1/2 full, better yet would be 3/4 full. After draining you can flush the tank out with another 1/2 or 3/4 tank full of water and then empty the GRAY TANK.*

Make sure you use a separate water hose to rinse the dump hose if you choose to go the extra distance.

We have been RVing since the early'80s. Our RV is 11 years old and the tank gauges work just fine because I follow the above mentioned directions. We use our bathroom in the RV just as we use our house bathroom. That is what it is meant for.

I wish I knew this before buying that unblievably expensive RV TP!

John, I'm with you. Our new MH has a flush system that when you dump, you hook up a hose to a connector on the outside. It sprays out the black tank nice and clean. So, I don't worry too much about the "yucky" stuff. Agree totally about the TP too.
