I would LOVE to surprise my DS with a me & him only trip when he turns 10 (double digits are a big deal in our family!). If you've done a trip like that, how was it?

Also, he has twin little sisters, that I would also like to take one at a time alone when they turn 10. Granted, I have a loooonnnnngggg (like almost six years!) time to figure out how I'm going to do this, but I'd love to know how any other families worked this out!

Thanks!

My parents did vacations like that for us when we were growing up and as the kids, who are now all older (im 34), would discuss it with eachother... we thought it was terrible.... we always wondered why we couldnt just go together... as adults we do a lot of vacations together and always comment on how we are now living our childhood vacations. That being said.... I think there are some things that are good for doing one on one.... going to movies, doing some shopping.. but vacations to me and my 5 siblings, believe that the best memories are created with everyone... and besides that you never know what could be the case years down the road when your twins are older... Never assume things in the years to come... the opportunity may not always be there.

Guess I should have clarified - we go as a family twice a year. A longer trip in June (usually eight days), a long weekend in October (usually four days).

The only reason I ask now is because he asked me this weekend what the chances are of us ever going "just me and him".

I think it is an incrediably wonderful idea! You will make the best memories. I have a 10 year old son, and this seems to be the age where you can really have meaningful conversations, and they are still interested in YOUR opinion about things.
My kids are too close in age for this to work (my DD is 12) but I really think it could work for your situation. And he wants to do it...that to me says it all!

I hope you do it....and then tell us all about it!

I say go for it. I would go down with my now ds9 when he was little just the 2 of us all the time... I now have a ds3 and a dd2 so I will probably never get away with just my oldest again... He is at the age that you can have fun and not have to worry about the other little ones.. You yourself can be a kid again too. Have a great time and I am so jealous...

Go for it! I am planning a Mom and Me surprise trip for my older dd in May. When my younger dd is about the same age I will take her, as well. Have a blast - I know we will!

:cool1: I went with my mom when I was 10, just the two of us, and it was awesome... We had the best time ever and I still haven't forgotten all the cool stuff we did together... I'm 24 now and again I'm taking my mom along with the kids, DS3, and DD13 months, for my son's 4th birthday. But I think its a great idea, I had the time of my life, and it is one of my most favorite vacations to date!

dizzienoodle-thank you so much for sharing your first hand experience! I really appreciate it!

Have a great time on your trip.

I took my son when he was 6- just the two of us. It was WONDERFUL!!! He was an only child then but I will probably do it again- you get to see your child as 'himself' and they will always remember that trip. It sounds like he may be feeling a little lonely for you to ask you if he can go with you alone.

I would recommend taking the other children by themselves when they reach the same age so that they do not feel left out, and so you can have the same experience with them.

Have Fun!

The magical age for an "alone" trip in our family is 16. I dont think DH would let me go with one child to Disney, though. He would want to go too!! Anyway when DD turned 16 we planned a surprise trip to NYC for her to see Beauty and The Beast on Broadway. This was a wonderful trip with just DD16 and DH and I both went. DD's dream is to be in the B&B show at MGM or Broadway!!
My DS11 is already discussing things he would like to do at his 16th BDay trip. We will plan something great for him, too. Then the wait will be on for DD8.

I took my oldest DS to the beach for a 3 day weekend when he turned 10, (and I plan to do that with the other two when they turn 10) and I have taken each of my children on a just 'mom & me' Disney trip; my oldest DS to DL when he was 11, youngest DS to DL when he was 8, and DD to WDW for her 6th b-day. I loved having that one on one time with them in our favorite places! They loved not having to share mom! Of course we also enjoy traveling with the whole family, just got back a couple days ago from 5 days of all 5 of us plus my dad at POFQ, but there's something extra special about that one on one time.

I think since you do go as a familt twice a year this is a one time slone trip that they will each get. If Husband doesnt mind taking the little ones go for it!!!

by the way blessedbythree - good idea to go see Beauty and the Beast the show is ending July 2007 on Broadway, NY and is being replaced by Little Mermaid!!! I saw B& B this past October with my sister (mommy only trip) and it was wonderful!!!
