The major argument against gay marriage is that it is deemed sinful in the Bible. Why would a heterosexual Christian person get thrown in Hell for making gay marriage legal?

Ok I asked something similar to this a week ago at my church
I didnt say the gay part and no I'm not gay but the answer I got was to god sin is sin he doesnt weigh one sin bigger to another there all sin...
But Jesus died on the cross to save our sins and we can make mistakes because of Jesus dying on the cross
We dont have to go past and all we have to say is a daily prayer saying sorry
Heck if it was me I would send my self to H-E- Double Hockey Stick for all the bad things I've done and I look at one of the thing I did 10-11 years ago very poorly on
But I'm thankful to know god see it as sin and sin is a sin and all I have to say is a sinners prayer its gone
Maybe not inside of me but to god its gone
So to answer your question you wouldnt be sent to H-E- Double Hockey Stick for taht
I mean I support gay marriage, assisted suicide does God not like that probally not but I have another way at looking at it
I say they have a lot of work to do on me and I havent completely comfirmed yet
I mean I'm one of the most Liberal Obama supporters on the street
Yes am I making a sin in his book yep but he will forgive it...
I can still go to heaven I personally see it as my decision
I dont think anyone know these views but yep there true...
But I havent completely "confirmed" yet I may do that on Wednesday but I do think hes real
I mean to me were all a mistake when I look at it the atheist way but to Christians were not...

There are lots of type of christians that believe in all different sorts when relating to sexual orientation and same sex marriages. Many christians now believe that the bible needs to be reinterpreted to be relevant to our modern age.

In order to answer your question, you need to be specific.

I'm pretty sure not all Christians believe in a hell either.

I don't know why they would. I'm a Christian and I don't care if gays get married. It does not affect my life in one single way. If God wants to send them to Hell when they die, He can. I really don't think a loving God would send ME to Hell for supporting equal rights for every person.

OK. I am not christian (I used to be catholic...) so this may not be entirely correct. I also support gay marriage, so again, not the specific one to be asking.

But mostly I think it's because supporting it is "against God's word". And if you would go against the word of God, then you must be deserving of punishment.

Or, that's how I would see it.

and as for being "against the word of God", check out these Bible passages:

Leviticus 1:9 states that the smell of a burning bull is pleasing to the lord. Should we all burn male cattle?

Leviticus 25:44 states that slavery is legal, so long as your slaves come from neighboring countries.

Leviticus 10-16 says that anybody who takes the name of God in vain should be put to death. I've apparently escaped death inumberable times.

Leviticus 11:10 tells us not to eat shrimp because it's an abomination unto God.

Leviticus 19:19 forbids the wearing of garments of mixed fibers (ie: a cotton/polyester blend t-shirt).

these verses and more are part of the reason why many practicing christians think the bible needs to be taken less seriously and that not everything in it should be taken at 100% truth.

For a great read on this, pick up "The Year of Living Biblically" by AJ Jacobs. He spent a year following the bible to a 't'. With the exception of killing his son who had hit him (a bible verse states that any child who hits his father should be put to death). Think of all the children!

Being thrown into hell is not the reason why Christians are against gay marriage. There are several Protestant religions (such as Jehovah's Witnesses) that don't even believe in hell. What I can assume is that Christians believe that Marriage is a holy matrimony; Marriage has been seen as religious and sacred since the Black Ages. If one were to support gay marriage, you would, in a way, be going against the word of God (who believes homosexuality to be an abomination).

Edit: Yes, just like what was said above :D

I am 100% towards gay marriage.

At first I was against gay marriage.
Then my uncle came out and said he was gay.
That totally changed my view, and I can honestly say I have never been so close to my uncle in my life than now. I love him even more.
And I realized that he has had the same boyfriend for eight years.
Never cheated or anything.
And it really makes me sad that they can't get married.
Really sad.
If you love someone, you should be able to get married.
You shouldn't get discriminated.

:sad1: :sad1:

I am against gay marriages 100%. I am a strong christian and the Bible says that gay marriage is wrong. I dont think the Bible needs to be changed to "fit" todays views. The Bible is written by the mouth of God, not by the mouth of random men who wants to please every tom, dick, and harry out there. (if ur name is any of these i am sorry) Alot of things have changed since Bible times. yes i agree. But i noticed that u only quoted from Leviticus. Have u ever read the new testament then? Alot of rules were changed in the new testament.

Back to the original question, gay marriage is wrong. Marriage was made by God for a MAN and a WOMAN. have u ever noticed that in the beginning there was man and woman? it was Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. i truly believe that if God wanted us to be gay, he would have made us gay from the very beginning, no not of our lives, but since the earth was created.

if u have any questions for me about my religion or anything please feel free to pm me.

Sorry but I disagree with you.
You can't help if you fall in love with the same sex.
Sorry for some reason I am in the arguing mood!
But that's your religion so I wont argue!

:)

Well, the Bible was changed. Chapters were taken out.

Why is only the New Testament being followed so closely then? Shouldn't EVERYTHING in the Bible be followed equally if it is ALL God's word?

I believe fully and 100% that gay people should be together. In favor of the seperation between church in state, as well, I believe the church cannot be forced to provide religious ceremonies.
But gay people should most definitely be able to get the same rights financially and etc. as married people do because that is sheer discrimination that they cannot currently.
I'm taught in the religion classes I take that the Bible must be taken Contextually, meaning it was written for a specific period and people in time, so the messages would have been understood better.

OR else we'd have one hekuva society following all the sexist rules against women found in the bible.
Just sayin'. I'm RC, by the way, but not by choice.

ETA: I'm all for unions and stuff, especially for the rights over adopted children. Did you know that if a couple is together that one can just take off with the child when they leave and not grant any visitation rights, etc? That's horrible. For the child and everyone involved.

I agree. I think the only reason there is no nationwide marriage or civil union (I really prefer this term because I don't think marriage should be redefined) is because it is against God. Well...not everyone is Christian in this country so it's still mixing church and state. People need to get over this idea that being gay is a choice. WHO would choose that? There is scientific evidence that people are BORN gay but people still insist that gays want to be a part of such a highly discriminated against group. It's pathetic. Gays should have every LEGAL right that hetero couples do. Not doing so is really just saying it's not right because God says so. Not everyone believes in the Christian God.

I agree so much here. The people who come out, knowing the challenges and discrimination they'll face, are some of the bravest people I know in these times. My heart broke for them during voting season when Prop 8 was passed...

Ecclesiastes 9:8 says that we should always wear white and anoint our heads with oil.

Deuteronomy 25:11-12. This one I need to quote directly. It's just too out there not to. "11 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity."

Numbers 5:11-20 dictates how to tell if your wife is cheating on you. Give her a mixture of water, barely, and dust. If her stomach swells, she's a cheater. In which case you should stone her and the man/woman you suspect her of cheating with. (according to Leviticus 20:10).

Exodus 21:5 says that if your slave is set free after 6 years and decides to stay, you should bore a hole in his ear.

1 Corinthians 11:6 says that if a woman doesn't cover her head she should cut off her hair.

1 Timothy 2:12-14 says, and I quote: "12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.".

There's a few more that aren't from Leviticus.

and also- the new testament (specifically the four gospels and the letters) weren't written by God. They were written by men recording their journeys.

To your 'Adam and Steve' argument, the reason a man and a woman were placed on this earth together was so that they could reproduce. People bonded over time and fell in love. Honestly, you can't help who you fall in love with. If two gay people that you don't even know got married, how would that affect your life in any way?

I'm not religious, but I believe that The Bible wasn't written as a set of 'rules'. Everything is symbolical and should not be taken literally. I always thought of The Bible or any other holy book as a doctrine, not rules.

xD

I think I'm going to stop eating shrimp (not that I ever did), burn some bull and when I have a kid I'm going to do some sacrificing for my 'unpure blood'.
Actually maybe I'll refuse blood tranfusions too seen as blood outside the body is unpure. Who cares if I live, I'll be pure
