Question for the Dance Moms

This is kind of a weird question but what would you wear to dance in other than a leotard and tights???

DD10 is going to a dance convention this weekend. It's a Faith-based convention that focuses on the meaning of dance along with the technique stuff...sorry I'm not describing it well. It's called Dance Revolution..... www.dance-revolution.com if anyone wants to check it out.

Anyway, DD's dance teacher tells me last night that she can't show her back or wear booty shorts...no body hugging clothes Isn't the whole purpose of dancewear to be able to see their body line??

DD has been to other conventions. She usually wears a leotard, tights, and booty shorts with warm ups over top until she gets her muscles warm. Other conventions usually have alot of girls with their middrift showing but dd does not wear that.

So what do you think they expect?? baggy shorts and tshirts?? Her teacher said they want them to wear ballet shirts for ballet but dd hasn't worn one of those since she was 5.

I would say a dance skirt over her leotard. I think maybe the teacher was trying to say that conservative dance attire is what she expects. Meaning, not Britney Spears dance clothes. I know all the girls wear booty shorts etc. and I don't think they look innapproriate at all but when you go to a convention/competition you need to look more professional. I would ask the dance teacher exactly what she wants the kids to wear.

Part of the problem is that dd's teacher is not even sure what they expect. She has never been to this particular convention before. She called yesterday to inquire about what they meant on their brochure about "no open back leotards"....she assumed she meant they didn't want ones that were completely open. They said they didn't expect to be able to see the dancers back AT ALL. They also said they "frowned upon" booty shorts

I'm really just confused as to what they want. Guess I'll pack about everything!

We have a friend of the family that their daughter goes to these types of conventions and yes, they want them to wear looser fitting shirts and baggy "basketball" style shorts.

None of the leotards my DD has could be worn at this type of convention. All of hers have to deep of a scoope neck, both front and back, or her backs have straps that criss-cross.

I would have my daughter wear a high necked, long sleeved leotard and tights with a dance skirt... maybe even a liturgical dance skirt. (They are longer.)

I think a longer dance skirt would look much more elegant and traditional than baggy shorts.

It sounds like they want a high back leotard (no criss cross or deep scoop) and no dance pants or leotards where the kids fold the top down and you can see the small of their backs. Also, no shirts that are too short - meaning when they stretch the shirt should still stay down and not ride up so their belly and back are out. I think they are basically asking for conservative dancewear that looks professional.

Any regular scoop neck leotard, long or short sleeve, is appropriate. What most dancers used to wear 15 years ago. Problem is, leotards have become so fancy, no one can seem to remember what they are (any doubt, see the "clearance" section in any dance store - or the cheapest leotards) Yup, booty shorts have become the norm in many places, but there are still ballet skirts, warm-up pants and capris that do just fine.

I went to the website to see if there were photos of the convention-there is a video so watch that and see what everyone else has on. It looks like sweats and t-shirts from what I can tell but I didn't actually watch the video-just looked at the picture.

I never did a convention for dance but at dance camp we wore boxer type shorts and tee-shirts.

Thanks! I hadn't actually noticed the video on the website before. I feel alot better now. I need to pack her stuff this morning and I'm packing a little of everything. Looks like she should be comfortable in leo & tights with a tshirt and shorts over.

Thanks everyone for your imput. This convention looks much different from the norm and it kind of took me off guard at first. I hope she gets alot out of it.
