Question for SoCal locals...

We're thinking at DL in Jan. 2004. How's the weather in Anaheim and San Diego in Jan? Is it warm enough to hit Huntington Beach and Coronado beach in SD, or would it be better to wait until March?

You can hit the beach, but I wouldn't take my jackets off.

The weather will be decent but the water will be COLD.

January is usually a very nice month to visit. The downside that the coasts often get a layer of fog, which will reduce the temperature and sunshine.

Coming in March, you're gambling on when our few weeks of rain will occur. Sometimes we get a rainy Feburary and March is nice, or sometimes rain really hits us in March. And this isn't WDW afternoon storm that moves out. Once the rain gets here, it usually sticks around for at least a couple of days. Then we'll get a break, then back to rain.

Yikes! I hope the rain doesn't follow us to California when we go in March. We're from Vancouver, B.C., and in Feb/March/April, it rains wayyyy too much!

If we do decide to go in May, which week in May would be less crowded?

Go at the beginning of the month of May if that's what you decide. It's after Spring Break and before most schools are out. Weather is a little more consistent in May than in March and the beaches may be nicer.

I agree the water will be pretty cold then. If you want to check out the beach for scenery and not so much for swimming, I'd suggest heading over to Santa Monica/Venice Beach. There is always something going on there, and the Santa Monica pier is a great place to spend a day.

January is COLD! It might be nice to take a stroll, but to sunbathe or swim, no way! Have fun, whatever you decide

I think I'm going to forget about going in Jan. I was only thinking Jan. because I've been working all year without a holiday. My job contract ends on Dec. 31, so a California escape sounded pretty sweet in Jan. However, if the weather is going to be cold and I can't go to the beach, then I'm going to have to wait it out - till at least March.

Also, if it's cold, it wouldn't be all that wonderful to get wet during a DL/CA ride (such as Splash Mtn, or the River Rapids).

Unfortunately the ocean is still very cold in March. It won't start warming up until spring/summer. The Pacific is such a large body of water that it takes quite a long time for it to warm up (and it never warms up like the beach in Florida!). Good news is that in both January or March there could be warm springlike days. My niece's b-day is in January and she had a wonderful outdoor party this year -- it was beautiful and warm!
