Miss Puggles just keeps getting one ear infection after another. Any ideas on what we could do to prevent them? We seem to go to the vet about every 3 weeks with one. Give her oral antibiotics and ear ointment- they get better, and then she gets another one. :pug:

We had 2 pugs and one got ear infections alot too. The only advice to try to keep them as clean as possible.

Side note our girl pug turned 18 today. We can't believe she is that old and still kicking. We lost the boy when he was 9. She lives with my mother and she has spoiled her so bad but she must have done something right for her to last this long.

Happy 18th Birthday Tasha :pug:

Miss Puggles is just 1. I hope she is around at 18. Happy Birthday to Tasha!!

When we had a bull dog the vet gave us a special product to clean her ears and wrinkles. He said that they needed to be wiped out every other day to keep them clean to prevent infection. I am not sure what it was called but could only be prescribed by the vet. I'm pretty sure it was around 20 a bottle. You might want to ask your vet about that.

Wow 18! What type of food does she eat?

Mimi Q: I've posted your question to my pug message board. Will let you know if someone responds. I agree with bcvgal to keep them clean and dry. I have one with ear problems but do the same as you... ointment and it always comes back. My vet recently suggested that once we clear it up this time, to continue doing the ointment every few days.

Thanks. I've tried the ear wash the vet recommended, but that doesn't seem to be helping.

Our beagle is prone to ear infections. I clean out his ears at least once a week. When they start to look gunky, I use the ear flush.

He gets his infections in the spring. Our vet thinks it might be some kind of allergy thing. They are awful and expensive (antibiotics, pain killers, ear drops and ear wash). He has had a really bad one the last two springs, so this spring we will be extra diligent about checking him and flushing his ears. I would ask your vet if it could be some type of allergy.

Per the President of AL Pug Rescue:

I bet "paws-down" a food change is in order. Yeasty ears are a Pug thing...but food can certainly play a large factor in it. I also would suggest a malacetic cleanser such as Dermapet.

Thanks. She eats Little Caeser's wet dog food. I will check out Dermapet.

Our Pug (Princess Pugsly :pug: ) used to get ear infections all the time, but we changed her food to California Natural and now she rarely gets them. I've found the blander the food the fewer ear infections. HTH

Over the past years we owned 3 pugs and they had a lot of ear problems. Most likely due to the ears flopping over and air can not dry them out. We now have had a mini schnauzer for almost a year now and no ear infections. Course his ears have been clipped and the ears are "open" for the air.

My rescue, the one on the right, gets them all the time, he is on prescription food. Besides keeping them clean, I give a tablespoon of plain, non fat yogurt with his breakfast. Good bacteria vs bad bacteria. :pug:

Your pugs are so cute. I can't believe someone gave that little fella up.

Thank you. He has the absolute sweetest disposition, everyone that meets him is amazed that he was a rescue.

Update on Tasha

It's with a broken heart-We lost our beautiful girl on Oct 31st. We miss her but we know she's playing with Fuji (our other pug). My mother had her cremated and she has her ashes. She will be missed. :pug:

We have a bulldog and the same thing happens to him. The vet told us to clean his ears everyday. It is literally a fight to do this so we try to do it at least every few days. As long as we keep up with it, he is fine. If we forget and don't do it for awhile, he gets an infection immediately. Then the fight is even worse. He is 55 lbs, and all muscle so my DH has to pin him down to clean his ears, he hates it!

I am so sorry to hear that. :grouphug:

Chronic ear infections can mean a food allergy - or just a poor quality food all together. Look for something with no corn, wheat, by products. 3 main sources of specific protein in the top 5 ingredients and human grade food. It's cheaper than you think and you'll be amazed at the differences in health! www.dogaware.com has lots of info and links.

Also, I have a floppy eared dog (Shih Tzu) and I feed yogurt on a regular basis. Actually, both mine get yogurt on a regular basis because it's yummy, good for them, and easy to freeze in a Kong, but it prevents ear infections due to yeast overgrowth just like it does for us. Mix it with some fruit and freeze it into a pop and she'll think she's died and gone to heaven!!
