We'll be traveling through Indiana in the upcoming weeks. Traveling from Santa Claus up to Indiana Beach. Planning on taking Highway 231.

Any opinion of this route?

Can you make good time on Hwy 231?

Is this is scenic drive?

Thanks for the info.

Steve,

I can only comment on the stetch of 231 I'm familiar with, from Greencastle to as far as Indiana Beach. 231 is a one lane road that goes through farmland and small towns. There will be stretches where you can travel at highway speeds, but there a chance you can get stuck behind farm equipment.

i wish i could help, but i haven't driven that stretch in a LONG time...

hope you have a good time when you're here!

It will indeed be scenic, but it will be slow going. Pretty sure there will be flooding along that route too. If you want to make good time, you'll probaby be better off on I65 and cut over once you get to the Valpo area or so.

Thanks for the info.

We're heading up from Florida to go to Holiday World and Indiana Beach, and to find cooler, less humid weather.

What about highway 41? My map shows that it's a divided highway...is it 4 lane?

Thanks again

I'd agree with Galahad and recommend 65. That's a REALLY long trip for a state highway. I took a drive from DC to Indy once on US50 thinking that it would be scenic. It took me forever! Couple of lessons learned from that trip (just in case you decide to go ahead and do it):

1) Most gas stations on those out of the way roads close No later than 8! I was DANGEROUSLY low on gas, with no where to go.

2) There are often detours that are a long way out of your way, because they have to steer you to another state highway. Check with AAA.

sorry, I haven't been that way in forever.

I use to live by 231 near greencastle, have a house up for sale near there and going this weekend , it's very scenic and yes the gas stations are far apart and they close early. But worse ,if it's raining alot some of the roads there flood!!! and it would be very dangerous. hope this helps
Kim

Thanks again for the advice. I-65 it is.

I guess it doesn't matter if you're sightseeing from a two lane
versus a four lane.....corn is corn.

Interstate driving is a lot less stressful than driving unknown
two lane roads.
