My son has the Xbox 360 arcade console. He wants Xbox live for Christmas. From what I'm reading I THINK I have to purchase an add on hard-drive. Is this correct? I don't want to get him the live if he cannot use it.

No you don't need another drive. It's just the capability for online play. In some games, there are expansion packs you can purchase (ie, extra maps for Call of Duty) but another drive is not necessary.

We don't have one and we are going on our 2nd year of live. A working headset is pretty much a must though.

I don't know but here is the site. I just got an XBOX360 for Christmas so I am not up on the info.

I guess you have to connect to the internet and buy the online deal.

Begin playing: Xbox 360 Arcade console is everything you need to begin playing right out of the box, including Family Settings that allow parents to restrict game access for younger players. Comes with a wireless controller, and 256MB of memory. This console includes an HDMI output, so you can experience your games in the highest definition possible, up to 1080p (HDMI cable sold separately).
Xbox LIVE: Xbox LIVE is where games and entertainment come alive, the only unified place where you can play with anyone, anytime, anywhere. Connect Xbox 360 to your broadband connection, attach a storage device (hard drive or memory unit) and get instant access to Xbox LIVE Silver. Express your digital identity through your gamertag and gamer card, talk with others using voice chat, and access Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

Here is a link to Xbox website that tells what the requirements are for Xbox Live. Looks like you need a hard drive OR a memory card.

A memory card like this....

The best price for Xbox live that I've found is on Amazon----12 months for 39.96

My DS11 just LOVES the X-Box 360 Live.

I just asked DH and we do not have another hard drive, the console hard drive itself is fine. Apparently it depends on the version you have, one has the hard drive and the other does not and you have to but it after market. DH says you could probably look up what you have on-line but if it was me I'd call X-box and ask them to help me figure out what I need so Christmas morning everything is A OK.

One thing to keep in mind, if a player does not have a headset he can't speak with other players so I agree with Cindy B about that being an important part of the LIVE experience.

OP said they have the Arcade console and that doesn't come with a hard drive.

Yeah, the headphone is a very important part of the Live experience. The Microsoft headphones are $20 a pop, and DS manages to go through a pair every month or so. I have been buying them on ebay for $5 shipped and they seem to be just as good.

I can't answer your question, but if you text POWER to 24477, they will send you a code for free x-box points (which you can use to buy movies). I did this on 3 different cell phones, once I got 160 points, once 800 points and once I got a message that the promo had ended. I just did it tonight so it may be still valid-it is a Doritos promotion.
