I am window shopping for winter coats. I have never bought one that hasn't cost more than $30 as it gets worn so little.

I'm thinking of going the splurge route...spending more than $30 and getting something nice. I would probably buy 2 coats...one that is very warm, but stylish and one that can handle moisture.

The stylish coats...$50-$300 I don't know what the difference is.

The all weather coats...I can figure out the descriptions enough...but don't know why the pricier ones are pricey.

I am just not sure where to invest my dollars.

The stylish coat I would want to be able to wear
casually or with dress up as I don't alway want to look like the Michelin man. Something like a pea coat.

The other jacket--warmth without a zillion zippers.

Help!

Well, since you are moving to VA you definitely need warmth.

My daughter and I have been through the cheap "stylish" and "puffy" coats. My daughter bought a short, puffy coat from Target that was very cute and had a fur lined hood. It was $30 and she froze her butt off here. I have bought cheap dress coats and I find that the lining falls apart quickly, droops out of the sleeve, and the wool that is used on it is not woven heavily and the air will cut right through.

I would suggest going to Marshall's in the fall and buying your wool dress coat. Very good ones can be bought for $100 (even less on clearance). I got a great Calvin Klein long wool coat (pea coat style though) that was originally sold in Marshall's for $199 for $75.00. It has lasted me for years.

The winter jacket for outdoor use would be best purchased at Land's End, LL Bean and other better stores. You want a good outer fabric that resists tears, is somewhat heavy, and you want a down fill.

Good information..thanks...
So a higher retail starting point should be a more warm coat
that is durable that should have a longer life, right?

My husband is utilizing a coat he picked up at Walmart in VA for $15 and has been happy with it. I can't see how it keeps him warm..but he claims it does. It Doesnt look like it should be a winter coat.

Having lived in NY almost all my life the best bargains on coats I ever got was burlington coat factory (maybe there is one on VA?) also Marshalls and QVC stay warm

Coats/Jackets are made from large pieces of fabric compared to other ready-to-wear clothing. Plus there is padding (in winter type garments), zippers, hoods, lining....all of which will add to the price.

I have a number of outerwear pieces to take me throughout the year, from a lightweight all-weather/3-season car coat with a zip-out lining for spring and fall, a wool peacoat for cold but not frigid weather, a full-length wool coat to wear with skirts and dresses to cover bare legs, and a "puffy" jacket for winter's worst cold and snow.

These would be an excellent place to find your winter jacket.. Probably the best quality you will get for the money paid..:goodvibes
