Question about upgrading discounted tickets

I bought a couple of three day base passes for Universal right after the prices went up, from Undercover Tourist. I want to use one of them to upgrade to a Preferred AP when we get to the parks later this month.

Is it like Disney, to get the full gate price of the tickets towards an upgrade, you need to use it first? ie, enter the park? I think it's only about a $10 difference, but I can go inside first if it matters, lol.

You should get the full regular price on the tickets for your upgrade. There are a few exceptions mostly on student tickets which are sold to groups.
