I know that you cant actually swim in the water at the beach area, but can the kids play at the waters edge in the sand or will the Fort police come and kick us out....I know they will be in the pool most of the visit, but I am sure they are going to want to go down to the beach at some point

I can't give you an "official" answer, but I can say that we've seen children playing in the sand and at water's edge many times over the years. No one seems to bother them. We've walked down the beach and stuck our toes in the water with no problems either. Happy Camping.

Ditto on kids playing at the waters edge - we've seen lots and no one ever tells them to get out. And the only signs on the beach say "no swimming" as opposed to "no touching the water at all under penalty of death" ;)

When we went my lil ones played at the waters edge just to fill their buckets with water for sandcastles and I have seen kids and adults walking in the water and nothing was said!

Thanks for the info......you know how kids are: first they start off in the sand, slowly creeping towards the water, then the next thing you know they are in up to their knees.....I just wanted to be prepared should we have run into the beach police...Thanks again everyone!

Just tell them to watch out for the gators and wild otters. That usually keeps them from going deeper than their knees. But don't worry there are no gators at the beach.....most of the time.

Hmmm...small children - one of the favorite foods of gators. And where is it gators lurk when hunting? Oh yeah - shallow water near shorelines. Have fun!

I think I will start drilling that into them today........LOL.....you guys crack me up!

There are gators in the lake as well as other bodies of water at Disney. I would not allow any children near the water.

Also be careful not to let kids get too near the landscaping because snakes like to hide in the mulch. My friend's daughter was bitten by one at CBR a few years ago.

I guess I'm lucky to have swam in the enclosed area to the right of the dock back in the 1980's before the stuff on the bacteria, etc. shut the beach and River Country down which we also really liked. I often remember standing in the swimming area in the Jul/Aug heat and watching the MK fireworks at night.

Of course I played with real mercury and still have some real mercury switches and probably have changed out my share of abestoes brake pads, and don't want to even think about some of my 1950's lead painted toys that I still have, but 61+ years later living on the wild side I'm still there.

Life is just too short to sweet some the these now day IMHO overly restrictive standards.

I'm just a few years younger than you are. We played with mercury too-those little blobs were so cool.
Believe it or not, I am not an overprotective parent. I would never have thought twice about the lake until my son's friend lost the lower part of his arm to a gator- this was at home not at WDW, although there are plenty of gators there. It had not crossed my mind to think about the landscaping until my friend's daughter was bitten by a pygmy rattler at CSR.

Suddenly, everything is starting to make sense.

Thanks for the warnings.........I knew about the possibility of crocs in the water, but I never thought about the brush/vegetation having snakes..go figure. I will be keeping a closer eye out now!

You're welcome. Have a great trip!!!!

When we were staying a the Wilderness Lodge, a couple years back, we were told by CMs that the kids could splash in the water - just no swimming. They seemed to indicate that the problem was a lack of lifeguards in that area. Of course, the kids would not stay close, once they got in.

We had daily trips to the beach for 'splashing', until the fourth day - when a patrol boat pulled up and asked us to get the kids out of the water. They were clear that the reason was danger of alligators.
