Last weekend I booked a 3 night on the Dream for the upcoming June 3rd cruise. It will just be my 16 yo granddaughter (she turns 16 3 days before we embark and it’s her very first cruise) and myself. During the online checkin I marked myself as responsible for her charges but did not give her permission to make purchases without me. I’d like for her to have some freedom at the gift shops and I’m wondering if she receives Disney Gift Cards for her birthday can that credit be put specifically under her name onboard? Thanks for any insight!

Yes, Disney Gift Cards can be added for spending onboard. It will be easier if you combine all the gift cards onto one on disneygiftcard.com. I believe you would have to enable charging priviledges for her for her to be able to use her key to the world and it be charged to the gift card. You can do this at the guest services desk when you get on the cruise. The other option would be to add the gift card to your account and you pay for her purchases with your key to the world. If you are a gold or platinum member this would be a good option since you get a discount in the shops onboard but not castaway cay.

It sounds like OP is asking if she can assign the gift cards to her granddaughter and have the charging privileges' limited to just the balance on those gift cards. I believe the answer to that is no. Charging privileges are either on or off, I don't think they can be limited to just the gift card total.

Yes, they can just use the gift cards in the shops. Load up her budget onto a single gift card and then they can spend as they want anywhere on the ship. No need to separate it into a different on board account.

You can use Disney gift cards directly only in the Gift Shops onboard. All other things you pay for onboard are charged to your onboard account (spa, nursery, Shutters, drinks, excursions, tastings).

We used a gift card for a purchase in the shops just last week. My 6yo was so proud to spend his own gift card.

I agree with what you say the OP is asking and I agree with your answer. No way that I am aware of to limit charging to just gift cards value.

One way to get around that is to give her cash to spend and have her give thst
Cash to you each time you make a purchase for her. This way she can be responsible.

When my daughter was 4 I started giving her a gift card when we went to WDW. The first time was just to see what she would do. She loved having her own money to spend. She would ask ‘how much is this’ and hold it up. After I told her the price she would ask how much it would leave her to spend. She made some very wise decisions and I didn’t have issues with what she wanted. After that she would ask for her gift card every trip and for cash on non-Disney trips. Now at 15 she is asking for a debit card for our cruise next week. I think after reading this thread we need a trip to Target to get her a gift card. She can use it in the stores.

Not exciting for a 15yo anymore but they had my 6yo sign his gift card receipt like we signed our room charge receipts. He was over the moon.
