Question About Sharing Accessible Room at POP

So, my parents, sister, and I have suddenly decided a trip to WDW is a possibility for this summer. That said, my dad is wheelchair bound, so we would need an accessible room. For money's sake, we've discussed all four of us sharing one room, which under normal circumstances should be fine. But as we were reading today, we read that the accessible rooms at Pop all come with a king-size bed. Is anyone aware of accessible rooms with double beds? Is it possible to fit two rollaways into one room at Pop with a king size bed? Or are we going to be forced to get two rooms? Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!

We registered 3 people in a wheelchair accessible room and got the connecting room at no charge in February. That's one accessible room with a king size bed and one room with double beds. They won't confirm this arrangement ahead of time to discourage abuse of this policy, but they try to accomodate the exact situation you are describing. Make sure you speak to the special reservations line when making your reservation and explain your needs fully.

Special reservations will take care of you.

As I understand it, it is custom on the DIS not to go into too many details in public as to how that could be done. Unfortunately there are those out there only too willing to abuse the system as soon as they spot something they think is 'beneficial'.

We'll be doing WDW in december with 3 adults, one room booked. I need an accessible room with roll in shower, and they're taking care of it. Just sent me a PM if you want to know more.

PS: be specific as to what your dad needs. There are 2 types of accessible rooms; those with and those without roll in shower. Be specific about his needs, to avoid any mix ups.

As was mentioned, there are two types of accessible rooms. If your Dad needs a roll in shower be sure to request it at the time of booking so it can be blocked. If he only needs a tub with handrails and a toilet/handrails then there's a type of room for that need also. The roll in shower rooms at Pop have no tub but do have a fold-down bench in the shower. The bathroom is larger making the room smaller but not noticeably so.----Kathy

there is more information in the disABILITIES FAQs thread, including the phone number for Special Reservations.
As was already mentioned, make sure that you have explained what he needs. If he needs a roll in shower, those rooms are the same size as other rooms at that resort are, but are arranged differently. As dclfun explained, the 'sleeping room' part of the room is smaller because more of the room is used in the bathroom.
In order to keep enough room for moving around in a wheelchair (a 36 inch 'path'), most of the fully accessible rooms have a king size bed. That means the room only sleeps 2 people when a non-accessible room sleeps 4. It would not be fair to charge someone for a second room when the reason they can't 'fit' into the room is their special needs. Sometimes that is handled by putting a roll away into the room. Sometimes a 2nd connecting room is given. Special Services will arrange that and block a room that fits the needs.

You've all been very helpful! Thank you so much!

I can understand not going into great detail as there are many people who will abuse the system. I'll get on the horn with Disney tomorrow and see what we can work out.

Thanks again!
