Question about requesting a late check out

I would like to ask for a late check out, 12:00 or 1:00 if possible. When do you make your request, when you check in, a day before you leave???

Generally we have always tried the night before and have been told to always call the morning of our departure. Generally we have not been that lucky at Disney to get a later check out. This past trip, FIL called the night before and requested a 1pm check out and got it for 1 room.

I was told once, at check in to call housekeeping as soon as I got to my room to request a late check out (even though I was staying for a week) I have always done this since, and have always got a 1pm check out time. It pays to get your request in ASAP.

Thank you for your replies, I think the wise thing is to ask upon check in and then do whatever they recommend.
I've never asked for a late check out before, but I have breakfast reservations at Boma for 10:00, I thought it would be nice to go to the MK for the early EMH and then go over to the AKL for breakfast and then back to the Poly to finish packing before going back to the park.
