Question about renting points?

We are fairly new to DVC. My brother would like to rent points from us for a trip he's planning but I'm not entirely sure how it works lol

How do I know how much the points cost? and when he rents the points do we just turn around and buy the points back with the money he paid?

This is new territory for me lol so thanks in advanced for all the advice.

You can charge what you want for points. Average is from $9 (about to lose points) up to $13 (people looking to make money) Most are around $10.

Once you rent the points they are gone. You are basically selling them a reservation. There is no way to get those points back other than to rent them from someone else.

You basically have to keep in mind that the points cost you about $2 ($100/50 years) + $5 per year for dues. So I generally rent to family and very close friends for $7...

You are the only one who can see/modify/cancel the reservation so there is no risk to you as long as you have a cleared check 31 days before they start their trip. Some ask for agreements, most do not. A lawyer I once rented to basically said it would cost too much to try to recoup any losses to make it worth anything and if anyone wanted to rip someone off DVC rental would not be a very efficient or profitable way to go about it.

Basically, know the person you are renting to even if it is a short phone conversation. If you both feel comfortable, go for it. Most of my rentals are now people that I have rented to previously emailing me to see if I have any more points for their next trip.

It is entirely up to you to negotiate a price with your brother. You don't even have to charge him anything.

Your points have no value to anyone except yourself so you are really talking about making a reservation for your brother and either giving or renting that reservation to him. The points will be used from your account when the reservation is made unless it is later cancelled - where the points would be returned to your account.

If you are not planning a trip to use the points then renting them(actually a reservation) can be a good way to pay your maintenance fees and if you have a loan to pay on that. It is really up to you to decide if you can do this.
I have rented to people for $10 a point and as low as $5.25(family just to cover the maintenance) so you can also decide that. Once you use those points for his reservation they are gone but if you do have extra or have a time when you can't go it is certainly better to rent them than let them expire. I am not sure what you mean by get the points back. Once you make a reservation with your points for him, those points will be used up. You can not get them back.

So, you would only want to do this if the points you use for his reservation are not points that you have planned for your own trips. Personally, if I ever were to charge family members for a reservation, then I would only charge them the cost of my MF"s for the points.
