Question about renting points

I have never rented my points. My 200 points will expire March 1st of 2008 and it looks like our family cannot get away this year. To find a renter would it be best to book a room in say Febuary for about 5 nights and then rent it as a firm reservation? Or would it be best to just let the board know that I have 200 points that need to be used by March 1st? I would rather not bank them at this point if someone can help me with this process I would be appreciative.

It's probably best to post that you have points for rent and see what kind of things people want. That opens it up to everyone and not just to those who would be interested in a specific date that you previously book.

BTW, if you do book an actual reservation, and want to rent it out using the DIS Rent/Trade board, remember we don't allow listing any confirmed reservtions more than 30 days ahead. So if you booked a room in February, you could not list it on our boards until January. Just FYI.

In addition to listing the points for rent, you might take a look at the "Reservation Wanted" listings each day. If you find someone looking for a ressie you can fulfill, just PM them.

With that strategy, at least you know people are serious and have pretty solid dates already picked out. And you won't get as many people trying to get your points for a cheap price.

I read your statement that you don't want to bank this year, but that is still an option...at least for a little while. If I did the math right, you have until the end of this month to bank 50% of your points and until the end of December to bank 25%. (Those deadlines change in 2008, but for this batch of points, I think that's correct.)

As you get closer to November 30, I'd sure revisit the possibility of banking as many points as you can before the deadline. Once you go past those deadlines, your points are really distressed and it will be difficult to get a decent price for them. I'd much rather bank 100 points for the future than virtually give them away.

Don't forget that you can essentially roll banked points over from year to year. No, you can't rebank 2007 points again next year, but you can use them next year and then bank 2008 points into 2009.

Yes, we do that all the time. The rule to remember is that the next year, you have to use at least as many points as you banked. We have had some years where we have banked 150 or more points, and we just have to make sure we use at least that many the next year.

I appreciate the imput. I am on a waiting list for a 2 bedroom for the first week in January. I am getting a bit nervious that it will not come through.
By the time I hear from them I might lose the points or atleast most of them.

If you can't use your points, do you have a family member or friend who might want to use them? That would probably be the safest way to get them used without using them yourself.
