Question about pin trading

Please please please do some research before buying pins from ebay dealers. Many, if not most, at 1.xx a pin WILL be scrappers. There is a very good thread on the Collectors Board that provides information as well as some reviews on ebay sellers. Just because an ebay seller has 100% or 99% feedback does not make the pins they are selling legitimate. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2213419

I always forewarn folks who want to take up pin trading that it is NOT a cheap hobby.

I know alot of folks want to allow their child to have the experience of pin trading but not with alot of investment. While I can fully understand I also always advise folks to not get caught up in pin trading until they first research what scrappers are, etc. and second till they are aware of the investment/costs of this hobby.

My daughter saves her allowance for months/years to buy legitimate pins. She trades only with CM's and for the most part has been lucky in not getting to many scrappers. However, if people continue to flood the market with scrappers then her hard earned allowance is basically going to be "thrown away"/traded for a scrapper that isn't worth anything.

Thanks for posting Anjelica, I've already referred her to our CB thread and she found out she did buy scrappers. She contacted her seller and is getting a refund and will be using one of our green sellers on our oh so wonderful CB thread. :) And no it's definitely not a cheap hobby....I'm going to save so much $$ over the next couple of years with no APs or pin trading to worry about. LOL :)

Unfortunately feedback can mean next to nothing. Most pin buyers either don't know about scrappers or just don't care. FYI, there is a GREAT thread on the Collectors Board regarding good and bad eBay sellers, I would highly suggest visiting that thread just to learn a little about eBay and Disney pins. At $1 a pin I can almost guarantee that you will be trading scrappers. :( I do buy pins from eBay but not at a dollar a pin, unless I'm not trading them.

Pin trading is popular at DLR but the CMs there wear the lanyards voluntarily so you may not see as many at DLR/DCA as you would at WDW. Please visit our CB thread and have fun trading!! :)

I was going to say that.

The other place you will want to check if you want to get good cheap pins are the character warehouses. Before we went down this last time we stopped at the one in Washington state and got some four packs of Pooh pins for $6. The character warehouse right near Disneyland on Orangethorpe was quite a bit more expensive; but still much cheaper than the park.

I would definitely wait until you get your refund, then leave feedback saying you weren't happy with the quality of the pins, you suspect scrappers and then say they gave you a refund. Customer satisfaction is important but so is knowing what you're getting is real and not fake! It bugs me to no end when sellers do that.......

I'm soooooooooo glad you found our thread and it helped!!! And I'm sorry you got fakes but it's working out for you! :) I hope you find some other pins at a good price. Personally I'm good with paying a little more to know I'm trading good pins instead of scrappers. :)

UPDATE.........I checked my PayPal account this morning and the refund is indeed there! Does anyone know if it just sits there in PayPal or does it ever go back into the bank account that it's tied to?

I have not left my feedback yet. I'm trying to come up with the right wording to fit on that line.

Just wanted to add, if you have ANY questions please let me know!! With 4 avid traders in the family we definitely go thru a lot of pins and I do use eBay for them, I'm sure you can imagine the amount of experience I have. LOL

Thank you for the offer pixiewings!! I myself am more of a collector (and that's only what can fit on my lanyard which is rather full!!). The kids got into pin trading and I think it's just a fun thing for them. They certainly aren't looking for collectible pins or would even know what one is! I can definitely see how I could get easily addicted to pin trading though! Yikes!!! :thumbsup2

If you paid using your bank account you have to transfer it back, if you paid using a credit card (which I always do now because I have double protection) it goes back to your credit card.

Well let's see, I have a pin book, DBF has a pin book, DD13 has 4 pin books, DD9 has 2 pin books, plus all the pins we have framed or on cork boards......LOL

I am an avid trader/collector. I usually buy 20-25 pins for 4 days in the parks. Saturdays are castmember trading days. In Frontierland, castmembers set up 3 tables with pins to trade. When buying pins online, make sure that it lists no Sedesmas. You can find lots on Ebay that you choose the number of pins. You can also find pin lots w/ free shipping. Make sure you always open the pins first thing and check for the pin trading stamp on the back!! Pin Trading is alot of fun!! Hope you enjoy yourself!!!

Glad you got your money back.

I would definitely leave negative feedback. As for what to say:
"Pins sold were fakes. Refund given when requested."

- Dreams (who is major pin collector in denial some 300+ pins later LOL)

Yes, but be careful on eBay, as we've mentioned in PPs many of the cheap pins on eBay are scrappers, or more commonly known as fakes. I'd rather have Sedesmas then fakes........I would urge you to also visit our thread on the Collector's Board. :)

This is what I would say too, Dreams quoted it perfectly. :) Oh and I wish I only had 300 in my house.....LOL DBF probably has that many just in HIS pin book alone.....LOL Which is why we will probably be selling some after Jan. :)

That sounds perfect!!!!! Thank you!!

You guys do crack me up with your pin trading addiction denials! :rotfl: And having 300+ pins is EXACTLY what I'm afraid of!!! When I'm in the parks, it's soooo hard to find that 'one' pin to sum up my trip. If I was considering myself a collector, I can only imagine how fast the obsession would take over!!! :scared1: Who am I kidding.......I'm probably gonna get sucked into it at some point! :lmao:

We have a nice collection of pins from the parks on average each visit we usually spead around $300 or more. I think that it's great to get a deal but if the deal is too good then they probably are not the real ones. I've seen people say they have a true LE 1000 pin that came out in March 2009 but they posted their comment in Feb 2009 - I have one of the true pins that I purchased from the DCA in March 2009 for $12.95 - I'm not saying that they don't have a true pin but I know exactly when and where I purchased it. I love to trade pins but when I pay $6.95 - $12.95 a pin and then trade for something that is not real, It makes me mad.
What I am saying is think about it, if you paid for a pin $12.95 and then you got it on Ebay in a grab bag, how would that make you feel?
Okay, I feel better now. BTW - I have some scrappers too! I just put them in a different book and keep them as reminders of our trip.

I have a pin book that has a bunch of keepers in it, a cork board that's almost full with just Tink pins, a page in book of just Pirate pins, a lanyard with just Pirate pins (it's a pirate lanyard) and a skull & crossbones lanyard medal, I have a pink lanyard that I use for all traders and a purple one I use for both keepers that I like to show off and traders. I want one I saw in September (a lanyard) but I didn't get it then and haven't seen it since, it was Jack & Sally and I wanted it for Jack & Sally pins. :) It's so easy and yes, I do have an addiction, but I'd rather be addicted to pins then some other things out there. :)

That's exactly how I feel....I really get upset when I've paid full price for a pin and then trade it for something not so nice. So I try to stay educated on the subject and not to get too upset if I end up with a scrapper. I keep mine too, I've got quite the nice collection of them actually. LOL

I was gifted a pin 3 years ago by an acquaintance who was a HUGE pin collector. My DH asked if I was pin collecting. I said, "Nope, just have one." Well, I found out that one was part of a set of 6, so, of course I had to find the other 5. In that pursuit, I found others I liked and traded for them. My DH said, "So you are pin trading now?" I said, "Nope, just looking for a few I like."

At about 25 pins (sitting on the coffee table) he suggested I get "one of those book things they make for pin collectors." I explained to him that I didn't need one of those because I wasn't a collector, just casually getting a few pins.

Some 300 pins later, I have several sets on lanyards, in bags, on the coffee table, but have yet to buy a pin book. The household joke is, "Of course she hasn't bought one, that would make her a collector, and she's just getting a few pins she likes." ;)

Denial is a nice place somedays,

Well then I guess I'm a trader....LOL You should get cork boards to display them, then tell your DH you're still not a collector because they are just cork boards....LOL

I sure wish I could find one of these. I LOVE it!!

I swooned all through the Kevin and Jody product gallery shown here.

Can I expect to find other wonderful souvenirs in this league?

Ohhhh those are NEAT!!!!! :)

I too bought from Zoom_Time and didn't realize the pins were fakes until a Disney employee pointed out the coloring was off and the size was wrong (too big). I contacted the seller and he/she offered a refund but fed me a line of lies "I get them from multiple sources" Hmmm, scrappers I think! When I pushed the issue because of Disney's reaction and pressure on me to report him/her, Zoom_Time threatened to come after my Ebay account.

Someone has a guilty conscience!

i think you should stay away from pins that way or from your collection must of thus pins are fake and no one wants them if you try trading them
