Question about child's health...

My daughter's doctor called today. Evidently the age of her bones is that of a 2-year-old, and she's now 3.
They want to wait six months to see how she grows before doing any blood work.

My question: Blood work for what?
Anyone have any kids that this happened with?
And yeah, my wife forgot to ask what this could be a sign of.

So... What do you know about this kind of thing?

Since your dd's growth is so off mark, I wouldn't wait 6 months. I would head to a pediatric endocrinologist.

Blood work to is to check for chromosomal defects which would not change in 6 months, so I can't see a reason to wait for if that is the case, unless of course your dd has other issues that are not growth related. Does she have growth problems?

Why did she have a bone measurement anyway?

how did they measure her bones?

Are they basically going by a growth/height chart for her age.

Im not sure what exactly the reason was for this call....however so thats confusing me

Just what did they do to measure bone age?? I've never heard of this. If it's just height vs weight then it's normal for kids to be not within the "norm" at certain points in their growth.

They X-RAY your wrist.

Right, that's what they did at her most recent check-up.
She's had no problems at all, as far as we can tell. Perfectly healthy, if a bit small. And extremely bright, I might add (with a touch of parental pride.)
But then, I'm only 5'8'' and my wife is only 5'2'', so we're not exactly giants.

I would think that genetics would play a roll in this.....I am no expert, but I would push to get answers and not wait.. I hate the beating around the bush that doctors and insurance companies do to their patients and families..

Get your answers and get some peace of mind..

I have a dear friend whose daughter was being considered for growth hormones - but they were putting it off - she was a preemie, she's supposed to be smaller, etc. Now she's 11 and it's time for braces. Turns out her jaw was pushing against her pituitary gland. Moved the jaw - she grew 3 inches in 2 months! They are writing a paper on her. It's amazing, and very unusual. But it's good to know for kids who are having growth probs.

So what is her percentile on the growth chart? Has she stopped growing recently which prompted the xray?

Here is an easy way to determine growth (eyeballing it)...

Does she grow out of her clothes and shoes? How long is she in a pair of shoes?
For example, my dd wore the same size shoe for 3 years. Her clothes would wear out instead of growing out of her clothes.
Not normal.
But she did grow like 2cms a year (ht. no wt)so as long as she "grew the minimum" we kept an eye on it. I took her in every 6 months to pinpoint her growth.

At 5 she stopped growing and that is when I took her to the endocrinologist.

I would seek the advice of an endocrinologist if I were you. It will get you informed and better able to evaluate your child.
