I'm trying to follow the Atkins diet, however I'm not doing induction until next week (we are going to WDW this weekend) and figured we'd still do low carb just not as strict. So here is my question, we eat more than the "allowed" veggies, however I never go above the 20 grams of carbs, sometimes not even 10-15 carbs a day. So does it matter if per say I ate good all day only 10 carbs and then indulged on a small cookie (3 grams of carbs, 3 sugars)? Or will the food itself, carbs aside hurt the diet? I'm a little confused. Also I see cream cheese is not listed, but it is under >1 gram of carbs and no sugar, so is a ham wrap ok (slice of ham, with two black olives pitted chopped and tsp. of CC)? It only has 1 gram carb, no sugar. My problem is the diet says no more then six waking hours without food, and I take of my godchildren and fiance' works nights so often I'm up 19+ hours a day. I eat breakfast 9am or so, lunch around 1 and dinner at 6pm, but If I'm up till 1am or so thats over the six hours between meals...
I guess my point overall is, is it ok to eat more as LONG as you stay withen the carb count?

Carb for atkins is 20 a day correct?

Another reason I am asking about snacking is sometimes I feel faint if I don't (I have minor hypoglycemia). Sometimes when I exercise or am real active with the godkids, if I don't have something afterwards I feel very lightheaded. It's not for the fact of just eating, I need it to not feel so faint.

Alright I'll try,..

No, you can't have sugar...

Part of the light headedness you experience on a "pre atkins" basis is from fluctuating blood sugar levals, by not eating sugars/carbs you will eliminate this.

20 grams of carbs, to be made up over the course of the day of the ALLOWED foods, not cookies, crackers etc.

Cream Cheese IS ALLOWED...full-fat type.

Your allowed EITHER 3 cups of salad's/veggies.......OR 2 cups salad/veggies and 1 cup cooked veggie.

You need to eat when your hungry- but the more often you eat, say smaller amounts every 5-6 hours, will curb cravings.

Hope this helps

You answered my questions. Hopefully the lightheaded feeling will go away soon. I want to stick to this diet ALL THE WAY, just was curious on the rules. So the ham wrap is allowed then, which is great because one of these sometimes makes me feel better. Thanks!

Atkins is a great cure for the low-bloodsuger light-headedness. I didn't experience any problems with this once I started eating low-carb and didn't have any problems while on induction. I still stay at or below 20 carbs per day over a month on the program.

My DH, however, did say he felt out of it when we we started induction. He increased his carbs to 40 per day and still loses weight and felt immediately better (he's 6' and has high BP/high cholesterol and is on mediation for both).

I eat something every 3 hours...3 meals and 2 snacks per day (although sometimes I'm not hungry for any snacks and force myself to try something). Prior starting Atkins, I suffered a great deal from low-bloodsugar and light-headedness. I also was down to only eating one meal and one small snack a day and still gaining weight. It took several weeks for my body to come out of starvation mode and actually decide that it's OK to let go of some pounds.

Best of luck to you...

I had low blood sugar before the diet, but after 3 days so far its got worse. I feel light headed and weak (sometimes sick to my stomach) all the time. Even after a meal. Today I couldn't even get my meal down before I felt woozy and stopped. I did however buy Dr. Atkins book today and read that if this happens I might want to try 1oz or 2 of nuts or some allowed veggies to lessen the dropping blood sugar. I did test my blood sugar and it was 89 at 7:30pm which is 1 1/2 hours after eating dinner. Need to read up and see if that is normal, I think it is, but it felt a little low...

Just one note on the ham wraps: Ham has a LOT of sodium in it, so it will make you retain water and you won't be losing weight as quickly. I like using turkey or roast beef for my wraps. ::yes::
