Question about cancelling

I don't own DVC yet, currently looking seriously to buy. I have a question about cancelling though.

If I understand the rules correctly, there is no penalty for cancelling a trip outside of 31 days. If you cancel within 31 days, the points go into holding, which means the points you were going to use for the cancelled trip must be used by the end of the UY (regardless of whether they were banked, current, or borrowed). So if I have a Sept UY (I don't know if Sept is an actual UY, but just go with it for the sake of example, please) and have a trip booked for Oct and cancel within 31 days, I just need to use those points by the end of August the following year. Correct?

Related scenario - if I have a Sept UY, I can cancel a trip scheduled anytime May through August by the end of March (outside of 31 days) and bank the points I was going to stay on (assuming I was using current year points) because I'm outside the 4 month window. Correct?

Thanks

Not exactly. It is true that the points will expire on 8/31 of the following year if not used. However, holding account points may only be used to book a reservation that is no more than 60 days in the future. Availability is often quite limited once you get to the 60 day mark, so holding points can be tough to use.

If you have a September use year (and there is one, BTW), then you have until the following April 30 to bank points. As long as you cancel a vacation at least 31 days prior to check in, the points are returned to your account with no restrictions. If you are within your banking deadline, you may bank them.

SO you would have to cancel a May - August vacation at least 31 days in advance and by the end of April if you wanted to bank the points.

The above applies to current use year points. Banked and Borrowed points expire at the end of the use year into which they were banked or borrowed.

Thanks, I had the same question. I'm a long-time member, but fortunately, I've never had to cancel one yet. I was going to make ressies for next May, but am already wondering if I'd end up cancelling and what would happen to the points. Now I understand.

BUT, if you made a reservation for a non-DVC vacation, those points are now reservation points and will have to be used at another non-DVC vacation.
