Question about cancelling DVC reservation

Here's the situation... My husband works overseas, and chances are pretty good that he'll be home for a while. However, his company could call him back at ANY time, only giving him about a week's notice. This makes planning a trip VERY complicated.
I'm planning on renting points to go in Nov. (because there's no availability in Oct.) My question is, what happens if he gets called back to work, and I have to cancel? Is it a huge ordeal to cancel? Is there a cancelation fee?
If he does get called back, he'll only be gone for 4-6 weeks, so I could re-book for when he gets back.

Since you are "renting" points that would be between you and who you are renting from.
With such short notice my quess is you would probably be out of any money paid to the owner.

When you rent points from an owner it is almost always considered a final transaction. Most do not "refund" at the last minute since they lose out on the use of their points and are stuck.

You would be better off making your reservations with Disney.

your situation is not one where you should rent points, you should book straight through CRO where you have more options. Canceling a week out puts the points into a holding acct and then they have to not only be used within that UY, they can only be used to book a room 60days in advance.

Renting points doesn't sound like a good choice for your situation.

As others have said, most owners consider renting a final transaction, and will not refund your money. This is because DVC cancellation policies are complex, and you're talking about a very short notice reservation. If you cancel a week (or even a month) out from your trip, the points go into a restricted state, which will make it significantly more difficult for the owner to re-rent. Depending on the owner's use year, even next to impossible. They'd stand a high risk of losing the points.

As far as rebooking goes, that may not be possible, either. Most owners book their trips 7-11 months out. Availability at 4-6 weeks out is slim at best, nonexistent at some times of year.

Sorry. I know it'll cost a lot more, but you really should be booking through CRO. Their cancellation policies are a lot more flexible.
